Is there a way to change the appearance of the stock messenger app

From when I first started using my new phone, all my sent text messages were a light green/blue. The other day I was texting my brother and my sent text messages were a light blue, then it went back to the original light green/blue. Is there a way to change the color? Any idea why it changed by itself for a short time?

I don't have the S9 to verify but there should be options within the message app settings to customize appearance.

Also if you download and use any themes, they would change the way your stock messaging app looks as well.

That's what is confusing me. I didn't change anything. The color was just different, and then it went back. Something else I just noticed, those sent text messages with the different color bubble also say "Read" next to them. All my others after that don't.?

Just wanted to add I'm using Nova launcher
