Is there a way to make Google Messages notifications comparable to Samsung Messages?

So yeah I read like everyone else that they're phasing out Samsung Messages. Fine. But my issue with Google Messages is I've tried all the notification settings and nothing wakes the screen the way Samsung Messages does. With Google the entire screen remains black and a tiny little blue notification icon shows at the top with a dark gray bubble that says "Messages", very easy to miss. With Samsung Message the whole screen wakes like when you double tap it, you see the full lock screen with a nice long blue text notification bubble.

Is there any way at all to have Google Messages do this? I can't for the life of me understand why the industry is making it harder and harder to get notifications. First they took away the little LED light, which they could've simply had a little pixel blip replace it but they didn't, then they made the vibration motor far weaker, and now this tiny Google notification with a completely black screen. Makes absolutely ZERO sense. Anyhow, if anyone knows a fix please do share. Thanks!

How about using Edge Lighting for Google Messages? You could pick a colour for that app.

I don't have the edge lighting option on my phone, it's grayed out. *EDIT - just read that it will be grayed out if animation scale was turned off in developer options which mine is. Gonna turn it back on and test.

OK, so changing animation scale from Off to .5x edge lighting now works, but then I have to deal with the annoying opening/closing app animations and such, I like instant and no silly animations. Still don't get why Google's notifications are so unnoticeable. Screen stays black and only the tiny blue message icon appears with "Messages" (I choose to hide the message content on the lock screen so people near me can't read my incoming messages). Old app showed the whole lock screen with blue Messages notification bubble. Oh well.

If you want a more advanced Edge Lighting, try 'Notification light for Samsung' by Jawomo. To me a trustworthy developer who's been around a long time and actually maintains it.

You get full control over the style, color, which apps, the frequency, respect DND or not, Low/Charged, and tons more. Love that app. (Loved having a phyisical little blinky LED more but that's 10 years ago now).

*I am not affiliated with, make any commission or any other form of vested interest in the app, just pointing it out because I think it's an amazing app.
