Is this normal for battery life?

Looks like you were browsing the web a lot during those 5 hrs or your display is set too high. I would check your brightness level and possibly cut it back to 40%. My screen percentage on battery use after a whole day's use is always in the 30-40% range. I never see it in the 50's let alone 60%.

What's more important than battery life is screen on time. That would give a better indication if your battery life is "normal" or not. I find the auto brightness setting does well for me in terms of clarity and battery life.

I feel I am an average text, chat, surf, call user and my phone typically doesn't hit 10% until 20+ hours. I am convinced that smart rules help a lot.

On mine, chrome seems to suck batter life faster than anything else. Even more then when I'm streaming music and texting half the day.

If you allow google now to update location, as it wants to, it most definitely will suck the life out of your battery.

Unfortunately you are the first and only person that I've heard of with that issue. I allow Google Now to update my location and my battery life is still stellar. I've never seen anyone else disable it; most rave about it.

Try this for starters, then search other forums.

And, if you just google "google now and battery life" you will see many, many comments on this. Your battery life may well be stelllar, and your particular usage pattern may overshadow the google now battery drain, but it was very noticeable to me and many others.

It's honestly the first I've heard of the issue. I'd still chalk it up to a fluke or a wonky device, though. There is too much support for the pro crowd. The GNex on Verizon has always been a problematic phone, a sort of red-headed stepchild.
