Is TMobile's $30 4G plan gone?

Yeah, I noticed as well when I decided to check for purposes of this thread's discussion that it's very, very hard to find the $30/mo plan, and I'll bet that Joe Average would never be able to find it if he didn't know to look for it and have a lot of patience to do so. I don't understand why T-Mo won't let you just buy blocks of minutes to add to a pre-paid plan; there's no accounting reason I can think of, such as iOS for iPod Touch costing you money for updates, but iOS for iPhone does not, due to accounting practice arrangements established in accord with Sarbanes-Oxley.

*shrugs*

And as for the $30 plan, I think it's just a little less profitable for them than the other plans.

Tried to set up the $30 plan but no joy.

Went through the activation screens last night, selected the $30 plan, then T-Mobile dumped us to a screen that said, "We?re sorry, we?re still working to process your activation. Please wait a few moments and then try navigating to another web page. You should receive a text message to your device when your activation is processed."

Fast forward to tonight. No text message. Went through the activation screens again, selected the plan... and was sent to the same "We're sorry" page as last night.

An hour later, still no text messages. Also, no emails from T-Mobile at the address we gave at activation.

Actually, it's $70/month for unlimited everything with no caps ;)

Well I was saying 90 dollars if you get a phone through the down payment method and pay however much it is for it. A galaxy note 2, is 199.99 with 20 dollars additional every month. So that's why I said 90

I hope it's not gone. I was planning on getting a Nexus 4 with this plan next week. What's the cost of a comparable plan? I'm open to any providers...

Nothing comes close to the Tmo $30 5GB 100 min text plan in terms of affordability and the amount of unthrottled 4g data. There are a number of options of unlimited talk and no data for $30. but if you need data, like more than 1.5 GB, I think the next price point is $45. You'll have a number of options there with Straight Talk being the most obvious. But the problem with all the $45 4g speed plans is they are notorious for throttling even randomly and most customers seem unhappy with the unpredictability. If I was willing to go to a $45 plan, I more likely than not would just go to Solavei for $49. Customers over there seem very happy -- at least from what I can tell -- and they seem to actually give you 4GB of unthrottled 4g speed.

If T-Mobile gives you good coverage, they are a natural fit for the Nexus 4, either directly through them or an MVNO. I've been using Solavei (T-Mobile MVNO) since January. After taxes the $49 plan comes to ~$55/month. They also have a referral program which can effectively lower this rate.

You get charged local taxes if you buy a $30 card at Walmart. Maybe you can avoid that by buying from a 3rd party online.

You can buy refills online tax-free (all you get is the code), and whether T-Mobile charges taxes for refilling through their website depends on your state; in California you pay on a card bought in-store because it's a physical good, but you don't pay to refill directly on T-Mobile.com.

What did you buy to be able to get the new contract? Are you using Nexus 4? I simply can't find a way to get a new contract with this cell. T-Mobile lists Walmart as the only option, while Walmart does not sell micro SIM cards separately, nor a cell with a micro SIM card. Well, at least not in the Indianapolis neighborhood.

If you're talking about the $30 prepaid plan, buy the SIM on T-Mobile's website. It looks like the free and 99c specials are gone, though, so you'll have to pay $10 for it. Once it shows up, you activate online and you're good to go. If you're talking about the new postpaid plans, just go into the T-Mobile store.

I was able to signup for the $30 plan yesterday. Website made it clear it was for new activations only. However even though I activated the plan I still haven't paid for it (because I still have quite a bit of credit on AT&T.) Just wanted to make sure I got it in case the plan disappeared after the announcement. Does anyone know how long I can go without paying before they cancel my activation?

24 hours
What happens after 24 hours? Can you redo the activation with the same sim card or do you have to get a new one from tmobile?

It's been 10 months since I tried that plan, but I had some sort of snafu with the online activation so I had to call. It took me a few times of repeating that buying a sim card from T-Mobile online did qualify me to get that plan. She kept saying "Walmart" and I kept adding "and from T-Mobile online." She was very nice and eventually had to check then she set me up. It took about 15 minutes to get it done.

You can order a micro sim from t-mobile or amazon. You can also go to best buy. They usually have the activation kits on the shelf. It's the same price as buying a SIM from the other places. If they only have regular SIM, best buy can trim it down for you (for a cost) or trim yourself. You can also get the best buy card, activate it on the phone and then go to tmobile store to give you a new SIM since you'll already have service.

Thanks. BestBuy doesn't sell micro SIM cards in Indianapolis area, I was there yesterday. They have to be ordered via their web @ $14.99. T-Mobile online is cheaper option.

All stores should have sim cutters

Yeah they typically only have standard SIM cards but they can cut it down for you. You probably can talk them into doing it for free by citing they should have microSD is stock.

Thanks guys, Best Buys employee laughed me out. I am getting a cutter from Amazon, problem solved.

It looks like it's now a Walmart-exclusive plan.

And if you view the customer reviews, the very first one spells it out quite nicely: when you get this plan, DO NOT use T-Mobile to activate it. You have to just go through the packaging, because T-Mo doesn't have this any more.

I am confused, they specifically talk about purchasing of a new cell from Walmart. This would mean no unlocked Nexus 4 from Google, correct?

It's the Walmart website so I'm not surprised they steer you toward buying a phone from Walmart.

Like Jaysus said, the $30 plan is still listed on the tmo website. Just not prominently.

I am a recent convert to the T-mo $30/month plan. I was told a lot of things (most of which turned out to be false) by various Tmobile representatives, both at stores and in the technical support, and also by walmart salespeople, including one claiming to be a tmo sales rep.

In the end, I was NOT able to get the $30 plan through the tmobile web page. (By this time, I had already purchased a SIM card from the Tmobile store.) After three calls to technical support, two visits to a local tmobile store, two visits to a local walmart, and uncounted visits to tmobile and walmart web pages, Tmobile technical support activated the plan based upon a code I recieved when I ordered the plan from a walmart web page.

I assume they were simply feeling sorry for me, or feeling guilty, or tired of talking to me. In the end, all is well.
