Is your Pixel 3 spontaneously rebooting after Android 10?

I got the update on my 3 XL on Tuesday. I'm running AdGuard now. We'll see.

I had a full spontaneous reboot (as opposed to the short reboots we've had) an hour or so ago. Off goes AdGuard again.

I'm becoming more and more sure that AdGuard's narrative that this is something Google has to fix is false. It seems only AdGuard causes this issue.

I just emailed AdGuard to try and find out what they have to say about the fact that Blokada works. I agree, there is something to be said for the idea that it isn't Google. However, I also think it's still possible AdGuard's hands are tied. They did cite a specific issue and that Google is aware of it. Blokada seems like it's a much simpler app, although also a VPN approach.

If it isn't Google and they choose to do nothing, it means their Android app will slowly fade away as Android 10 spreads. Unfortunately, that could be a long time so it doesn't exactly put a fire under their feet.

I'll let you know what they say.

Thanks. My lifetime license isn't much good without the app!

You're gonna love the response I got from AdGuard. Now, two ways to go with this. If this is just a standard response they send under many situations, they aren't really listening. If this is a purposeful response to my specific inquiry where I was specific about the problem, maybe they fixed it.

In the latter case, sounds like it isn't a Google problem anymore.

Hello!

Thank you for reaching out to AdGuard Support!

Please try moving to AdGuard Nightly (http://agrd.io/android_nightly) and check if the issue persists.

In case the issue can be reproduced on the nightly version, please move back to the release version (https://agrd.io/apk).

Let us know how it goes!

Best wishes,
AdGuard Support

Yeah, sounds like a generic boilerplate reply.

I have been using the nightly versions for quite some time. So, the problem has persisted across many versions of those. I would think rolling back to the beta or stable versions isn't going to fix the problem.

Which update channel do you use?

I was using the stable last. I tried the nightly at some point. When I got my Pixel 4XL, I did not install it. It's still on my Pixel 3 but I don't use it much. I'm waiting for an announcement that it's fixed or you posting that it's working before I put it on my daily driver Pixel 4XL.

When I emailed them, I didn't tell them I don't have it installed right now. I acted like I'm using it.

OK. There have been at least a couple of nightlies since I disabled it and started using Blokada again. Also, that last spontaneous reboot I had with AdGuard on was a full reboot, not the short, weird ones we've been getting. It could be that something else that, though it hasn't happened again with AdGuard off. I'm not optimistic that's the case, but I'll turn on AdGuard and see what happens...

Thanks. I appreciate you taking the bullet.

BTW - did you get an update to "Google Connectivity Services" recently? I got it last night. Keep in mind again, I am on the 4. I don't know if this went to the 3. It mentions several things about VPNs in the update notes.

I don't think I have recently. I think a prior update may have also mentioned VPNs.

I just looked at the date on the update. It's December 6th. So, I may have just gotten it late (like the Dec patch that has yet to arrive).

Well... It's been more than 48 hours and to my knowledge there have been no spontaneous reboots, short or full, with AdGuard activated.

I say "to my knowledge," because I did have one PIN screen unlock appear earlier today (I usually use fingerprint), which happens after a reboot. However, once unlocked it didn't appear the phone had rebooted. I think it was one of the periodic PIN unlocks they throw in.

In the past with the AdGuard reboot issue, I'd have had a reboot before today anyway.

It appears the issue is fixed. Fingers crossed.

I uninstalled Blokada and dnspipe apps.

Can you remind me.... You already have the Dec update? and You are back on the stable build of AdGuard?

Just got the update. Should I go with the release version or nightly at this point?

Since we don't know what fixed the issue (Google or either of AdGuard versions), I'd say go with the nightly since that's what I'm using successfully. If you prefer using the stable version in general, I'd just try it and see what happens. If you have the reboot issue, switch to the nightly.

I was reading an email late last evening and had a short reboot as we've had with the AdGuard issue previously. I haven't had any since then. There were 3(!) AdGuard nightly updates during the day yesterday (prior to the reboot). I have no idea if that has anything to do with the issue. There hasn't been any update since the reboot.

I'll keep rolling with AdGuard and report back if it happens again.

I have to be honest with you. I am waiting for the stable release to work. It has rebooted at inopportune times for me when I was using it. I really appreciate your updates. I am following. I hope it continues to work! Please keep the updates coming. I may not be the only one watching this thread.

Nothing new to report since the one reboot.

You tried the stable release recently, or do you mean previously? I'm not sure when the last stable release was rolled out, or if it's the AdGuard app that was fixed, even. Since I'm using the nightly versions, I'm not sure how you'll know if the stable works (unless you have tried it recently).
