When I try to install some apps (not all) I get the following error:

"Couldn't install on USB storage or SD card"

I have tried de-mounting and re-mounting the sd card, rebooting etc. I can't find any settings that set a preference to install apps on the sd card. In the past I just moved them later. Any thoughts?

I am having the same issue and have tried the same things to fix it. Specifically I have had problems with Dolphin HD and Madden '12

I have been able to install some apps such as ESPN Fantasy Football and ES File Manager but not others such as Tetris and The Marblians.

I had a similar problem the other day where any app that defaulted to installing to the SD card failed while any that instal to the internal storage went fine.

Then even though I could see all my music, pictures etc... on my sd card I thought what if the card some how isn't contacting good and while i can read from it fine it isn't writting to it. I turned the phone off ejected the SD card then re-seated it, put battery back, booted phone and all the apps I had trouble installing then installed just fine, no more problems.

I don't know exactly what the problem was but if you haven't actually pulled the SD card out of your phone then put it back in it's worth trying.

I had this problem a week ago... ended up saving all my data on my sd card.. then doing a format... wallla... all problems got fixed including my gps location, which showed me in Spain for 4 days... no issues since i formatted and all is working better than when i first got.. restored all my apps and am a happy camper now... i'm not rooted either.. just to clarify that... on stock 1.70.605...

The solution? Go and delete smdl2tmp1.asec yourself. From what I can tell, it could reside in 2 locations:

/sdcard/.android_secure
