Issues with playing music

I have issues with songs skipping rapidly for no reason, using both the google play music app or the play app.

It also occasionally comes on by itself for no reason and starts playing songs.

Welcome to Android Central! Is this only on headphones, or also when playing over external speakers? Incompatible headphones might trigger functions like Play and Skip Forward unintentionally.

It is only with headphones that I have noticed it, but it has happened using the headphones that came with the device. Does that mean it is likely an issue with the headphones?

The headphones that came with the phone don't have any remote controls, right? Are you certain that the plug is in all the way? Also, make sure the jack is clean--use a damp toothpick to root around, or a can of compressed air to blow it out.
