I've been very careful with my phones. In all my smart phone owning years I literally have had only one decent drop that minorly left a small crack in an iphone I had. So i've always gone for the sleekest case I can get. But with the Pixel 3, the official Google cloth case looked cool so I got it. Thankfully, that is, because in my first couple weeks with my phone I had a drop from chest height onto concrete. The case saved the day. Moral of the story, no matter how careful you are, enough time goes by and you'll have a significant drop happen.

In the last 75 years I've said the same thing so many times I can't count'm. As I've gotten older I've come to realize it not always what's said that matters, but what's heard.

I carry a 357 Mag with hollow points.

I'm a revolver kinda guy myself as well, I carry a Smith and Wesson airlite 38 special sporting a laser sight with p++ defense loads. Very light, compact, easy to carry, and I can shoot a very tight pattern with it..... sometimes it's not just about size but accuracy as well ;-)

I've never dropped a smartphone... although I did drop a few flip phones ;-) I think a lot of that has to do with me using a Bluetooth earpiece most of the time along with voice commands, so I never actually have to hold my phone that much. I still always use a good case though because the "drop" is coming :O ;-)

We as consumers should never even look at the thickness metric on new phones since we almost always put a case anyways.

While I agree most use a case I would say the thickness metric still matters because that impacts the overall thickness

If they can make a plastic or scandium 642 or other j size frames which contains controlled +p explosions, like taurus same plastic model , you'd think they could make a phone that wouldn't break if you drop it. And S&W manages to put a physical key lock on to prevent unauthorized use. Phone mfrs could learn from other industries.
