I just got a Kindle Fire HD 8.9 a few days ago, I'm thinking about rooting it so it's more functional.

I do, however, have some concerns so please bare with me as I've never rooted anything before.

1: The Kindle Fire HD is from AT&T, would rooting it become an issue with AT&T?
2: The Kindle has AT&T 4G on it, would rooting it disable it from using AT&T's 4G?
3: Will the Kindle Fire HD run just like a normal tablet would with something like Android 4.2 installed on it, or would it suffer performance wise?
4: If I mess up rooting it, is the tablet ruined forever?

Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to leap without looking in this type of situation. I'm just very curious about rooting the device to run full on Android with no limitations as I have things I'd like to use it for in the near future (Battlefield 4 Commander Mode and Xbox Smart Glass for starter) and don't think they'd be possible with the Kindle's software. So, can anyone set me straight?

I am a long way from an expert on rooting, but if done correctly it will greatly enhance your tablet experience; but be advised that you can "brick" your device if things are done incorrectly. Because of the heavily modified Kindle OS, it bears very little resemblance to Android ICS on which it's based, and there is little developer activity that I can see. I've been told that it is NOT the ideal tablet to root or mod. I've had one for about six months and all the forums I've looked at really don't have all the "kinks" worked out. Also the fact that it has no SD card slot hinders things too. I would say if you have no experience in rooting or moding the rom, don't start with a Kindle Fire HD 8.9.

If that's the case I'm gonna see if I can't take it back and exchange it for an actual Android Tablet. I can't understand why Amazon would go so far as to butcher the Android OS to make it do less than it normally does.

Kindle and B&N have much bigger enterprises than their tablet divisions, ie. Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble Book stores and e-books. Both company's use their branded tablet to facilitate sales in their own stores AND both"dumb down" the interface where young children can use them. We just saw what happened to the Nook this past month and in my opinion Kindle "dodged a bullet" and is still in the market. By the way, I own one of each so how smart does that make me? Seriously not everyone on earth wants a pure Android experience, but those folks don't read an Android forum like this.
