Just got the New Galaxy s5 Active

Its obvious the OIS is turned off on one.

I have a Active and my wife has a s5 and there is NO difference in the quality of the camera, we have both shot videos and all of our videos are crisp and clear, what you can't see is if the guy in the video is "shaking the phone" or if the OIS is even on. Even a experienced reviewer in the comments calls a bluff on him.

People there is no difference in the "quality" of these phones, both have the same glass, internal components, etc. Both have same battery life, the only difference is that components were modified by design to make a tougher phone.

Another plus with he S5 Active seems to be the addition of Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The youtube video was made with an S5 and an S5 Active held together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1zYmwjcwhU#t=29

The difference is considerable. It is easiest to see if you open the video in 2 windows side-by-side and start the second one half way through where the video is from the S5 Active. If you sync the two videos, you can really see the difference.

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) is an optical/mechanical solution, that you can't turn off - at least not on a phone. The S5 has software Image Stabilization (IS) that is pretty good. However, all references on the web to OIS on the S5 when it was first launched was noting/lamenting that it didn't make it in.

The guy who made the video was doing a simple test to see if there was truth to the rumor about OIS on the active. He heard rattling when he shook the phone so he thought he would check it out. He simply clamped the two phones together, started both recording and stomped around. Intentionally making a jerky video with both simultaneously. Just trying to see if there was a difference. I see no intention on his part to make one look bad. I would have liked to see a shot of the setup though.

@rc75149 since you have access to both phones, you could easily reproduce his experiment. Maybe it _was_ just a setting.

I was looking at some close up shots of the two cameras. I do see differences that might point to the Active having some difference in how it is mounted to the body. I couldn't say for sure but it sore could be OIS.

A month or so in..

Phone has held up great. I had originally purchased a bumper with it but I was dialing 911 all day and when I finally just decided to roll with the piece naked, I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, im no longer up at midnight hammered anymore, (meaning that I just don't seem to treat my "stuff" irresponsibly anymore), but this device has held up well.

Ive never carried a device naked since I destroyed my first smartphone during iweek 2007. waited hours for the first iPhone to only crack the screen on a cart path days later... (after 3 putting)
Almost 8 years later I have decided the trudge to tundra once again...

Great Phone. Plus, now it can be rooted so that I can be done with the horse **** AT&T bloatware.. Phone is running like a champ!!

IM trying to get AT&T or Samsung to confirm that the camera's are the same. No where can i find any info on the S5 active camera other than "16mp rear," and Samsung isnt replying to me on social media. The only difference in the specs that I see on Samsung's website is that the S5 says "CMOS 16mp camera" while the S5 Active is just "16mp camera." Hopefully its the same, i dont see why it wouldnt be but then again I dont know why its so hard to confirm it.

There is a difference, I know for a fact that the active has zoom capabilities and the vanilla S5 doesn't.

I know for a fact that is incorrect, as I just zoomed on my wife's S5 and my S5 Active. AT&T rep just told me they are the same ISOCELL cameras.

I have the S5 and have no zoom capabilities. This has been discussed in the forums. How are you doing zoom on the S5. I honestly hope I am wrong.

Glad to be wrong.... thanks. Just tried it and it's great.

Go to settings on both S5 and look at the last row. You will see there is another way to get zoom on the active and that is to use the volume control button which is not available on the vanilla model. Thanks ... made my day.

I think it's so you can zoom in and out for underwater photos with the active key as shutter?
