Just played with a friend's zoom

iPads and Xoom are like any computer, the memory needs to be cleared after a lot of usage.

that's what im saying....I've had the Ipad since day1....I had 4 random restarts in the first few days, but I haven't had a need to restart it since. It's been at least 2 weeks now

You should restart every computer you own, outside of servers, and even then, at least twice a month.

I thought they taught this stuff in school these days?

This is personal preference, not facts. I've run personal PCs for years and never turned them off. It has way more to do with managing and maintenance then "should do" anything. I have had the original iPad and never shut it off in between iOS updates, iPad 2 on since March 14th zero issues, no restarts etc... The Xoom only gets turned off if it locks up, otherwise a simple app like System Panel can easily free up memory.

Common sense and a little tech know how, neither of which is taught in school.:D

The great thing about the Xoom is all the tools available so you can see what's going on, see what's eating your battery, CPU cycles and ram. They also allow you deal with those heavy usage apps and shut them down. Yes I know Android is suppose to deal with them automatically blah blah, blah... It doesn't always do a good job so learn and use the tools to make it run better. Plain and simple.

If you don't restart your personal computer every now and then you're dumb. Plain and simple. Just deleting the temp files and what not will not do. After a few months your computer would be running much slower than it should be. Same with the iPhone and iPad, there is no way you have no problems without restarting unless all you open is the browser, and even then I'm calling bull.

What is wrong with these two bsers?

The iPad isn't a magical device that denies the logics of modern computer hardware, it doesn't use ECC memory and requires restarts, plain and simple.

Over the course of use, an update, new software install etc... you may restart but saying it's required is simply not fact. Saying a PC gets slower over time because you don't restart just shows ignorance of why it slows down.

How about before spewing nonsense, maybe learn a bit about computers and oh something like Malewarebytes? That will take all the bull**** and spyware and adware off keeping your machine running fine. I'm amazed how many people talk about this crap with ZERO idea how to properly maintain an OS. Just as all the Macheads that claim Windows 7 is slow, and their PC runs so slow, all i can say is that is why Best Buy makes a fortune from ignorant users.

LOL....really? these ae supposed to mobile platforms....I have friends that haven't restarted their iphones in months with no issues....I have been running the ipad 2 without a restart since March 15th....

The iPad is an app launching platform.....completely different and limited animal compared to an OS (android) that has a real desktop. I'm typing on and iPad 1 (owned since day one ) now and will buy an android tablet shortly. Maybe one day they'll allow flash on their browsers....so frustrating. And it does have horribly laggy browsers especially when it virtual memory gets full of apps....they are not designed to exit by themselves in their new OS.

Not sure which sites your trying to visit on the iPad but the app "iSwifter" works pretty well to bring flash sites to the iPad. It's a free download, but to get rid of the annoying pop ups it will be $2.99 as an in app purchase.

Laggy and buggy....try to use finance.yahoo.com with it. The apple devotees I've come across just laugh flash off. But it's a real problem for those who are financial investors as the vast majority of these websites use flash charts which the iPad does Not draw.

There are several occupations where accessing Flash based websites is necessary as part of a job description. Apple is stupid to ignore them, and it will lead to faster uptake of other tablet platforms the next couple years.

iSwifter is defiantly more of a entertainment app, built to run stuff like Hulu, Vevo and a some of the flash games kids like. Aside from that, not so much.

Ah, ya I have written off the iPad for business as email without the ability to deal with attachments is useless to me. Hopefully when Adobe updates Flash to use hardware acceleration all those types of sites with heavy interactive flash will run even better (or at all).

As an IT professional, I can tell you this is NOT nonsense. Over the course of time, applications/programs (be they on a computer or a tablet or a phone) will close and NOT properly relinquish the memory allocated to them by the OS. This happens for various reasons, most commonly because of a fault in the application/program or an error in the handling of the process by the OS. I am a database admin and when I have been building or testing big databases I occasionally get a crash which causes my computer to not only run slower but to start producing errors due to compromised memory allocation. A quick reboot fixes the problem and gives me a clean slate. When people call me about their computer suddenly running slower (especially with databases running), the first thing I tell them is to reboot and presto, assuming they have not gotten a malware infection, they are good to go again.

Again, the IPad is handling much less memory allocation than the Xoom, apparently that makes it run oh so smoothly and never needs to be turned off... but I am more impressed by the Xoom being able to do all the things it does even if that has a "possible" cost of needing an occasional restart. If you try to sell me a computer that never needs a restart, but it doesn't have a desktop and only runs selected apps that never push the system... I'll pass and get one that can, even knowing that it may need more attention to keep it running in top form. OOOH, it's so pretty, does not get my job done.

BTW, 'financial investing' is more than an occupation....it's something everyone does. Roths, 401ks, stocks, etc. etc. It's pretty important and it can't be researched on the web effectively on an iPad.

Mind you I like and use a Xoom, but I am starting to get annoyed by the iPad bashing. Apple can do what it wants with regards to flash and if it was that much of a problem they'd not be selling like hot cakes. Instead of bashing can we stick to comparisons and contrasts. You buy what works for you and the iPad works for the average consumer.

An iOS user will have a diferent view point on what lag is than an Android user. We all know that iOS is the opitome of Fluidness. Anything else is laggy compared to it. The xoom doesnt lag to the point that it is unbearable. Its actually not bad, but if you use an iPad for 6 months and then jump to the xoom, its not a pretty site.

I'm entitled to 'bash' cause I own an iPad. And it's not bashing when you speak the truth. Then again if you go to iPad forums they won't acknowledge flash is a problem. It's all part of Creator Jobs' Grand Design. LOL.

I just came back from a VZW store where I spent 45 minutes with an iPad2 and a Xoom side by side doing A/B comparisons. If there is more lag with one or the other of these, I never saw it.
