You can enable one hand operation mode, the ui will shrink to one side so one hand can easily reach all element on the ui.

I own both. My nexus 5 is my daily driver phone. I keep my Note 3 updated in case i want to switch to it but i often find my self remembering why its not my daily driver phone.
Often times i want to do something one handed and its not feasible with the note 3. Its mainly for that reason i dont use it every single day.
Its going to boil down to your personal preference. Both are great phones.

The Note 3 uses a micro sim card and so does the nexus 5 so there should be no reason why the same card cant work for both phones

With AT&T and T-Mobile all the mobile subscriber information is on the sim card. So by swapping SIM cards either of my phones will work. I sold my Nexus 5 a few days ago so now my daily phone is my Note 3 and my back up is my HTC One M7. But the M7 is up for sale. I will buy the M8 in a few weeks..
