I use SwiftKey: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.touchtype.swiftkey - it has great word prediction, lots of symbols as 2nd characters on each key, and also supports swyping if you prefer that sort of thing. I tried the stock Samsung keyboard but didn't like its word completion (it doesn't have any - you have to finish typing the word or pick it from a list); I also tried the Google keyboard but you have to go to alternate screens to get symbols; I never tried Swype so I can't comment on that.

Keyboards don't stay open when you're not typing. You can generally press the Back button to close the keyboard if you're in the middle of typing.

I use the Google keyboard but I have to have the settings on very aggressive to prevent from making too many mistakes. The gesture typing is really good on it. With this setup I am pretty fast. I used to use Swype and really loved it. Buy it isn't that good if you are typing with two thumbs. I also didn't like Dragon dictation replacing Google voice typing on the Swype keyboard.

I'll have to take a screenshot of what I'm talking about,is there a way to add images to posts here?

I've been using Swype for a long time and love it. Tried swiftkey and didn't like it. Wife uses Google keyboard but it doesn't seem very accurate on Swype style typing

I've been using Google Keyboard for about a month now. Love it and haven't looked back.

touchpal is the best and most underrated keyboard out there. fastest most responsive keyboard ive ever used. its amazing for tap typing and swyping..

I will second SwiftKey. Best of the keyboards I have tried. The predictions and accuracy is the best of them all. I have tried stock Samsung, Swype, Thumb keyboard, and SwiftKey.

As also stated above you can close most keyboards when not in use but I know SwiftKey does for sure. Just swipe down or hit back and it will close and you can bring it back up if you need.

Good luck and try a few. I has to try several before I found one that worked nest for me.

I have to add my support for TouchPal as well. I've been using it for over a year and love it. It's responsive, has lots of special characters available on main keyboard, learns quite well, and it's free.
Edit: Oh, and it has both touch and swype modes so you can pick and choose your poison. And it has a little 'down button' you can press to get it out of the way.

I just switched from Fascinate to S3. I had Swype on Fassy and loved it but on my S3 it just types every letter I go across, sometimes multiple times and inserts random spaces. I have similar problems with the stock keyboard as well as having trouble getting it to recognize the screentouch sometimes. I bought it used (6 months old) with a screen protector. I never used a screen protector before and never had a problem. Could it be causing interference with the capacitive touch?

I switch back and forth between Swype and Swiftkey and have never seen what you've described. I don't use a screen protector.

Thumb Keyboard is worth a shot. I've tried Swiftkey, Swype, SlideIT and the stock Google and Samsung keyboards and always come back to Thumb Keyboard.

If you don't use sliding input, Thumb Keyboard is the best of the bunch in terms of features and customization options.
