hi. today is my last day to decide if i am keeping this phone. if you haven't read any of my other uninformed threads, i will briefly reiterate that i came from years of blackberry, have always used and will continue to use apple computers and have never had an iphone (but am definitely considering it since making the jump from BB).

after two weeks with the htc one, i think i have it set to do what i want. it still doesn't display the number of unread SMS texts but i am hoping that's a glitch that works itself out. sorry, i don't mean to rehash my complaints or frustration with this phone. i mostly love it. i only have one quick question: research here and abroad has left me a bit confused. do i need to use an app for back up and restore? or is that feature built in? this is an UNROOTED phone. i have seen a lot of people recommend HELIUM and a lot of people recommend the built-in htc back up and/or gmail. is there a definitive answer to this question? it is the one thing still nagging at me in my android vs iphone debate. in a disaster (loss, stolen whatever), who will make me whole again? any advice or info is appreciated. i don't need to back up music. the little music i have on my htc one came from my computer. photos are being backed up to dropbox i think. and obviously gmail has my contacts...and apps??

thank you!!

You need to download it. There are numerous backup / restore applications - both free and paid- available on Googe Play. The HTC one being one of the free ones among them. You can do a factory restore at anytime ad without any additional applications, but to restore your settings, you need an application.

ok, so to be absolutely certain...gmail, htc back-up, dropbox et al are backing up my information and apps. but my settings will require a 3rd-party app such as HELIUM?

thank you.

That is how my phone's have been, although the htc One may be different. If you do a reset of your phone when you sign in with your Google account it will start downloading all your apps. But yes, in order to save your settings and such you will need a third party app.

Google only seems to restore the same phone. If you switch phones Google did nothing for me. Helium is a almost perfect way to backup stuff. You can pick app data or the data and the app. It is the best way I have found so far to make sure app data is restored on a new phone. I don't think Helium backups the system settings though. What is a good app for that?

Backing up all your settings, apps, etc on an Android device can be a bit of a challenge for the average user who just started using Android. Some manufacturers have desktop clients that make it easier, but it's still not complete in my opinion.

Using Helium is a good option to backup most of your data and have a complete backup, such as saved data for apps. I'm almost positive that the HTC app is know for AT&T devices, so unless you are on that network then you won't be able to use it.

For the unread messages, you'll need to install a third party widget. It'll alert you to the number of unread texts on the lock screen and desktop. You can use another widgets called DashClock to show other alerts on the lock screen.
