Latest rumors: Name change, plan changes, release before Xmas

Any word on off contract pricing? Im trying to see if I can afford to ditch my thuderbug for the gnex. :P

Thank you for tuning in to This Week in Galaxy Nexus Rumors, brought to you by Tylenol and Pepto-Bismol. Here's the latest, coming from a long time member of Android Central, who has been right before and wishes to remain anonymous.

  1. The name will be the Nexus Prime.
  2. The phone was to be released before Thanksgiving, but software issues are holding it back. Verizon exec's want the phone released before Christmas, even if that means bugs aren't fixed and a patch will need sent.
  3. Coming in March, unlimited data will be no longer grandfathered to those that upgrade their contract or make any plan changes.

My take on these:
Number one sounds absolutely insane. Accessories are already made, and the packaging for them says Galaxy Nexus. But. Verizon would like to differentiate their product, and since it's technically different from the other versions, this would make a lot of sense. It would make our job much easier with two different names for two different phones.

Least we forget the Droid Incredible which launched as HTC Incredible? (I still have the plain white box from my pre order that called it HTC Incredible, and I am sure many accessories also had that branding. I pre ordered mine so I didn't get accessories till later.

Number two matches up with what we've been hearing. ICS isn't playing nicely with MyVerizon.apk. Specifically, I've heard there are authentication issues and folks wouldn't have access to Verizon areas of the Android Market, including VCast. This means software people paid for won't be available, and that's not making anyone happy.

And of this is the case I am totally okay with the delay. Despite the uproar about Bloat: My Verizon is a useful app (no problem with it being on the phone at launch) and believe it or not there are people who use VCast or things line SongID (which I cant currently get on my Razr and Rezound for some odd reason.

Number three -- we knew it was coming eventually. Start saving your pennies so you can buy phones outright and not extend your contract. It's worth it to keep unlimited data on a device that gets 40M/sec downloads.

Discuss, and try not to kill each other :)

Total garbage and I really wish you news sites and bloggers would stop feeding the flames if this kind of thing. Until you get leaked docs substantiating it it's irresponsible to report this kind or crap, even if it is just in the forums for now.

A few verizon people I know call it the Nexus Prime and to top it off, some retailers have jumped the gun with accessories. This is the most anticipated phone on Verizon since the Dinc maybe?.

It was the code name for the device just as Vigor was the code name for Rezound, and Thunderbolt was code named Mecha. In tech circles these terms tend to stick around. I've seen it with Blackberry as well.

I have unlimited data on AT&T at the moment (iPhone 3GS), and I've only gone over 200mb once in the last two years. I do most of my data "heavy lifting" on wifi just because AT&T sucks so bad, and I don't tether, stream movies or watch very much YouTube on my phone (I'd rather watch that on a PC screen). If I switch over to Verizon for the GNex, I'm sure my data usage will go up just because I will have better network access when I'm out and about, but I still won't be tethering or watching much video.

LOL you cant compare an iPhone to an Android. They don't multitask and don't sync data in the background. I had the 200mb data plan on my Vivid and after only about two and a half days of barely using it I got the message that 65% of my data allotment (like 119mb) was used. I'd only installed a handfull of apps (mostly over wifi) and set up Facebook and Twitter syncing and used the phone for a few hours.

Actually, the code name for the Galaxy Nexus is Toro. So no, that's not accurate to say Prime is just like Vigor. Prime = fanboydom.

ok fair enough but the name is still the one it was sold to carriers under, early leaked internal documents use that name.

But early leaked internal documents are just rumor and wild speculation! We know they are false because verizon didn't officially say it!

It's very easy to go over 10GB a month.

If you have an office job where you sit for 8-9hrs, it's very easy to queue up 5 1 hour long podcasts a day.

If you work out, streaming music at the gym with Pandora or another app goes without saying.

For longer sessions, Netflix on the eliptical is a must.

Youtube videos on lunch. Websurfing, RSS reading. I could go on and on.

My question is, how do you not use at least 2GB a month on these awesome devices?

How do I not use at least 2GB? Because I have a life!! Honestly I'm too busy to spend THAT much time on my phone. Work, personal life, other entertainment, and sleep, that's how. I really can't see how people can use 5GB of data a month! People must have a lot of free downtime.

Plus I think you're forgetting about Wi-Fi. That's how people don't go over their 2GB or whatever their cap is. My work has Wi-Fi so I can connect to that with my OG Droid and listen to iHeartRadio or browse the web unrestricted while at work and not use my data. There's no filter on the Wi-Fi at work, only the wired PCs. Plus VZW coverage is non existent in our building at work. Plus I have Wi-Fi at home, so that's another way to conserve data.

Now if you're at the gym, then of course you have to use you're data. But I'm not at the gym any longer than 2 hours.

Every heard of Sprint?

Ha ha! What a joke. Yeah I had them from 2007 to 2009 and their 3G coverage is a joke here in Pennsylvania. My old blackberry with them constantly went from 3G to 1X. That's when I left for VZW. It's been nothing short of stable, fast 3G with Verizon.

Sprint's pricing plans have been the cheapest for a reason... because you're lucky if you get coverage.

What happens if you travel a lot? I'm in a band that does a fair amount of road shows, but this applies in plenty of other situations. Navigation, plus Google Music, plus looking up a good place to have a cup of coffee and a quick dinner in every city every day. That can add up pretty quickly. You can "have a life" and go over 2GB fairly easily. And I'm still on 3G. I can only expect usage to go up on 4G. Streaming Netflix might be nice on the road, for example.

A traveler is an exception. I will give you that!! Having a traveling occupation requires you to look at you're cell phone plan completely differently than someone who lives in the suburbs and works in the city. I can understand where you're coming from. I really love Netflix too, and look forward to using it on my next phone. I'm guessing it might be wise though to use it on Wi-Fi when available for a stable buffer on the video and to control you're data usage. I tried using Netflix on my OG Droid when it was released but the OG Droid just can't handle it.

just an fyi nextflix on 4g eats battery crazy fast. but its soo hard not to watch it when ur waiting around. :P

Has anyone else noticed that if you go to the verizon wireless site and search "galaxy nexus" you get some random hits (and the advert banner) but if you search "nexus prime" it takes you straight to the sign-up-for-more-information page?

Probably not significant...but kinda interesting considering rumor #1 of the original post

Now that you point it out, yes. "Prime" is the keyword that takes you directly to that page. Probably because that's the only page that has that reference whereas "Galaxy" and "Nexus" produces multiple results. Probably insignificant. <shrug>

I am guessing that a few weeks ago the change was made to rename to the Nexus Prime. They had to repackage all of the old Galaxy Nexus into the new boxes, probably with a matching manual as well. This led to the initial delay, with the hopes of it being released by black friday. Then, unexpected software issues popped up and delayed it further.
Just my hunch in expecting to see a Nexus Prime on launch day.
