Latest rumors: Name change, plan changes, release before Xmas

[*]Coming in March, unlimited data will be no longer grandfathered to those that upgrade their contract or make any plan changes.

Number three -- we knew it was coming eventually. Start saving your pennies so you can buy phones outright and not extend your contract. It's worth it to keep unlimited data on a device that gets 40M/sec downloads.

Discuss, and try not to kill each other :)

Then my last brand new phone will be the Nexus. That is IF it's released before March,

Is there a lock you can put on your data caps? If you have a 2gb cap, can you make it so once you hit that cap, you can't use data for the rest of the cycle as to not incur overage charges?

This may not make you feel better but, the Nexus Prime does have that data monitor built into ICS. I believe it will shut off data for you when you reach the limit.

If it comes to all phones that have ICS, it definitely makes me feel better

ICS has a data monitor, but will not shut off your data once you reach a certain specified amount, as you originally inquired about. For that, I know that parental controls exist that were supposed to do that. I was looking into that when I moved my son to a data plan. But, that requires another $5 per month fee. I am not sure if you can get parental controls for your own line or not.
They get you either way with the fees.

Actually ICS will disable data if a user sets a hard limit. See the link below:

Regardless of whether the rumor about the end of grandfathering in March turns out to be true, I'm sure we all know that it's coming eventually--and probably sooner rather than later.

I have unlimited data on AT&T at the moment (iPhone 3GS), and I've only gone over 200mb once in the last two years. I do most of my data "heavy lifting" on wifi just because AT&T sucks so bad, and I don't tether, stream movies or watch very much YouTube on my phone (I'd rather watch that on a PC screen). If I switch over to Verizon for the GNex, I'm sure my data usage will go up just because I will have better network access when I'm out and about, but I still won't be tethering or watching much video.

However, it's still an unknown even for me. For heavier users, LTE access could start bumping a lot of more casual users like myself into surcharge territory if we start taking full advantage of Internet capability. Sprint is already marketing the heck out of their unlimited plan, and this could be their ticket to higher market share over the next 2-3 years if lots of VZW and AT&T users start getting ripped off by excessive surcharges.

For those thinking of going to AT&T, their tiered data plans aren't really any better.

Unlimited data is nice but, until I tried LTE, my usage was similar to yours. It seems like once I had it, I was doing things had never done before, like watching youtube vids and, parts of football games just for the fun of it.

In reality, I would be ok with 2GB.

Don't care what's its called, just want it to be released already or atleast an official date. I don't really care about Verizon apps and I think we all saw unlimited data going away. I'd rather have tiered data and my phone work than what happened to AT&T with dropped calls etc.

I know Verizon likes to test the hell outta there phones but this is ridiculous, I'm willing to work with a few bugs as long as a software patch is released soon.

Scumbag Verizon.

Releases and toutes a 4G LTE phone with 20/mbps download capabilities with a massive 4.65 gorgeous super amoled HD screen.

Stops offering unlimited data and kills grandfathered data for upgrades.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm figuring. If it's there, I'll probably use it. :)

I'd like to get in on the GNex while Verizon has that double data special going on, just so I have the cushion of 4GB to play with. I doubt I'll ever exceed that much data. I'm just too much of a homebody, I guess. The bulk of my Internet stuff is done at home where I have wifi, and it's just a lot more convenient to access that stuff on the phone while I'm watching TV, or doing the occasional FB/Twitter update etc., rather than schlepping into the den to use the PC.

The people who are really screwed over by tiered plans are tablet owners. What's the point of spending big bucks on a nice tablet (especially with LTE capability) if you are limited to 4GB per month?

That's a good point about the tablets but, for me; it still hard for me to burn all my data. I have a Xoom with a 3GB data plan. I do use data more now that is has LTE but, I'm still haven't went over my limit. As of right now I've used about 1.2GB of my 3GB plan and, my data renews friday.

As much as I wouldn't like Big Red changing their policy, not sure how you would use more than 4GB of data (based upon their deal going right now) unless you are tethering all the time....I wouldn't switch from Big Red based upon their much better customer service and network strength!

It's very easy to go over 10GB a month.

If you have an office job where you sit for 8-9hrs, it's very easy to queue up 5 1 hour long podcasts a day.

If you work out, streaming music at the gym with Pandora or another app goes without saying.

For longer sessions, Netflix on the eliptical is a must.

Youtube videos on lunch. Websurfing, RSS reading. I could go on and on.

My question is, how do you not use at least 2GB a month on these awesome devices?

IMO, it kind of goes against the grain to market a phone that's supposedly aimed at using cloud services, then impose bandwidth restrictions. It's almost like Google wants to promote one vision of how devices should use data and the carriers responsible for delivering the data are not in step.

Maybe things will improve to the point where data bandwidth is more of a commodity than it is today (just like broadband was in its infancy)...

I guess I'm old school. I prefer to store my media directly on the device. I listen to music all day at the office on my 32GB iPhone 3GS, but that's easy because I've got about 29GB of storage space to play with. That's literally days' worth of music on shuffle. Who needs Pandora? :)

Being on AT&T and in an interior office, my connection is not nearly as strong as I'd need to stream all day. I was hoping to get removable media on the GNex, but I can live with 32GB.

Netflix would be a different issue, obviously, but I rarely go anywhere that I'd want to watch video on a phone screen.

how does anyone with sprint use more then 1 gb of data? you must live in the one place in the country where they have usable 3g.. or perhaps you are in one of the dozen places where they have wimax.

edit: can you printscreen your last months data usage? I'd love to see that you actually used 10gb..

Most people at work actually do work so that is why they don't use 10 gb a month like you. I have an office job and I never come close to that much data. Surfing the web takes forever to use lots of data, and I prefer my music on my phone rather than having to stream music.

I have an office job aswell.. and between phone calls and just plain concentrating.. I cant imagine a half dozen hour long podcasts a day.. but also.. why are people in office jobs using their phones for this? I stream pandora all day long.. over a wired connection.

Some companies have ridiculous blocks and filters. The last company I worked for had these blocks. Thankfully my current one does not.

Your situation sounds unique.
