Leaving 3g on and background data help reception?

Does leaving 3g on and background data help with signal strength ? I uncheck both when I need to save a little battery at work and to me it seems reception gets better , alot better when I have them checked ... I am checking signal strength thru signal map the dec. reading not the bars ...also my ASU jumps up when both are on from like 5 to 14

Not sure if it will do the same for you but its what my phone is doing ...strange
