If my 3G coverage got the 1mbps minimum that many people seem to get or a more common 1.5-2.5mbps then yes I'd say 3g is fine, but since I get much much slower speeds, sometimes only a few hundred kbps and speeds are erratic for me, I can honestly say 3g isn't nearly fast enough. I don't want to wait 10-20 seconds for a page to load or 30+ seconds for a youtube video to start, I want it all instant.

hopefully next gen 4g hardware will be more energy efficient
That's the only issue I see with 4G. Battery life. I used to keep to my laptop for browsing due to the lack of speed on my phone and size of the screen. But now with Lte and the larger 4.3" screen, I do a majority of my browsing on my phone. No need to go to my computer anymore

Seriously, people who wants to use their phone for social media stuff and email, don't need 4G. They don't need fancy stuff like Dual Core phones or Snapdragon power. It's simply wasted resources for those people.

4G and the Bolt is for people like me, who demands instant gratification 5 seconds ago. Because 5 seconds page download is not a requirement, it is standard, it is a right. 12-20Mbs speed is a daily occurrence, while I am at work and when I am home. It rivals my home FIOS speed at time.

I heart LTE.

Verizon finally made my whole area 4G and it's great. No more slow downloads and web browsing for me! 3G was fine for it's time and is still good for mobile web pages, but forget about it lol.

I mean, for downloads its faster - loading flash pages and stream video....but for checking facebook, looking at pictures, updating twitter, it really only seems a LITTLE faster, if that.

At the same time, it kills battery. 3G just seems like an allaround better technology, will run most of my every day apps at nearly the same speed. What are yall using 4G for that makes it worth it to you? Im cool with it because its no additional cost, but doesnt seem worth it to pay extra unless you're using a laptop or something.

Surely you must be joking. "3G just seems like an all around better technology" ?

By its very definition 4G IS a better technology.

And no, it isn't a 'little' faster. Its leaps and bounds faster. So fast, in fact, that the hardware and software can't keep up with it, hence why you might notice it only being a 'little' faster. The browser that HTC uses on the Thunderbolt can't render the pages FAST enough to keep up with how quickly the connection is pulling the data. The Facebook app also can't keep up.

So your assertion that "4G isn't that great" is nonsense. Its your opinion and you're entitled to it, but its nonsense nonetheless.

Yeah, Megan Fox isn't that hot.

*Theoretical scenario*
Megan Fox: Would you like me to take off my clothes?
Me: Meh.

Something people fail to consider with newer phones... It is not 4G that is causing the batteries to drain faster... no, its because you are driving the Bughatti Veyron of the wireless world. It is fast as hell, but you will run out of fuel in 13 minutes at top speed.

It is a sad fact that all the tech companies spend time into is processors, radios, and displays. You can upgrade the engine, transmission, and body of a supercar. At some point, you might want to look at a more efficient type of fuel. Manufacturers have really fallen far behind with battery technology.

Yes, that Thunderbolt with its LTE is like a Bughatti with a 2 gallon fuel tank. All the engine tech in the world ain't gonna make it suck less gas.

LAWLZ. 4G is a godsend for mobile porn addicts?

lol. It just doesn't bring you your news faster

Joking aside, 4G makes it so much more enjoyable surfing the net. I like sites site Break,Amazon, cracked etc.. and on 3g i always went with the mobile versions if they had one because of how slow they ran on 3G in my area, and i almost always hate the mobile versions/look.

With 4G going to the full desktop versions is painless now. Looking up stuff on maps etc.. is so much better now. I'm never waiting for something to download/finish loading. I live, work and travel in a solid 4G coverage area so I'm really enjoying LTE.

Only problem now is the RARE time I end up in a 3G area i think, How did I use to surf the web on this, it's so slow lol .

I'm with OP on this one. Bear in mind 80% of my phone use over wifi.

With 3G, I used wifi because it is faster.
With 4G, I use wifi because it saves battery.

I would also like to respectfully point out those that say "4G is great!" who have an extended battery have an unfair bias. Please take out the battery, use the phone for a week, and then get back to us.

I'm not bashing 4G, I'm simply agreeing with OP that the pros do not (yet) significantly outweigh the cons enough to say it is superior to 3G in every way. Right now, we trade off faster speeds for mucho battery drain. To me, quite frankly, that's a wash. A draw. In a few months when Big Red does away with unlimited data and starts charging us more because of 4G, I'll be even less impressed.

But people will say, "The unlimited plans are (ostensibly) going away for 3G too!" Correct, but 3G isn't driving the pricing bus anymore. The decision to do away with unlimited data stems from VZW's 4G deployment. Moreover, a large reason for the huge marketing blitz about 4G is so they can have something to point to when they invariably raise prices at the end of the summer.

Anyway, to reiterate, stock phone to stock phone, there are pros and cons for both 3G and for 4G, and I would respectfully disagree with those that say hands down, 4G is the winner.

I use 4G all of the time - i do not have the extended battery -and I have gotten decent battery life, I live in a strong signal area, so maybe that is it. Hopefully this will be fine tuned and others will see benefits as well. I also work from home with WiFi and don;t bother with it most of the time.

I disagree with the OP who said, and I am paraphrasing, "I don't think this ferrari is very good since i walk to school everyday and it doesn't get me there faster" He doesnt see a value in the speed itself, so perceived battery drain is just a negative. Some people just are not early adopters and should not jump on the first of anything that comes out....

That's a very good point. I would go so far as to say I would count myself among those to do not see a significant value in the speed itself. I'm certainly not saying there's value added, but based on my historical usage (mostly over wifi) I might be predisposed to yawn at 4G speeds. I would think those that relied upon 3G instead of wifi most of the time see a much bigger value than I do.

It essentially boils down to features vs. need. Features are features across the board, but the perception of need based on one's personal situation are significantly varied in magnitude.
