Let's see those 5G Speed Tests!

I'm with Three UK, just got a new sim and still the same. The guy in the shop was saying its because they are working on 5G and 4G is being affected, I told him it couldn't be that as my S9 is still able to get 40+mbps. He went through all the settings and couldn't fix it. Now he is saying the phone must be faulty. Will now have to bring both my S9 and ultra to the Samsung shop and see if there is anything they can do. If not its going back.

Man that sound tough.

OK, my wife is on o2 so I got her to do a test on her S8. With her o2 card she is getting around 26/28 mbps after a few tests, she tried my Three card and she was 29/33mbps
I tried her o2 card and this is the result with 3 tests. So its definitely the phone thats at fault. Very disappointed with Samsung, the thing is a lot of people might never even notice this as they will probably never test it, its only when they go somewhere that they were used to getting a bad signal they will find they can't get any signal at all.
One other thing I have noticed is my phone takes around 2/3 minutes for it to even get a phone signal when I do a restart. And when it does I get a screen telling me about the sim etc, Something I have never seen a phone do before! I'm starting to think this was a test phone that's been repackaged and sent out. As the bottom of the phone box actually fell out after I opened it! I thought at the time that's an awful shabby box for a £1200 phone!

No. How do you find out? Isn't it just 1 low band of 5G that Tmobile offers?
Download Net Monitor or LTE Discovery and you can see exactly What WCDMA, LTE, or 5G band you are picking up at any given time.. great Widgets to for Homescreen

Gotcha I will. I'm at at home now and live way on the outskirts of town and only get LTE. They're announcing they are shutting down our city tonight so not even sure I'll be leaving the house for awhile. I dont get 5G until a go a couple of miles down the road.

Here is my 5g speed test results. I get about the same results for LTE. I switched from Sprint to T-mobile to test out the 5g speeds for Des Moines, Iowa. I have ran multiple tests at various locations on different parts of town and am getting about the same results at each location for both 5g and LTE.
Goodness that's horrible.

Let's all remember that T-Mobile's low band 5G on Band 71 (600mhz) is only going to get you about 15-20% or so more speed vs LTE...they have been clear that this first 5G Band is to get their signal to more places as this low band goes much further but speed takes a hit...when Tmo and Sprint merge they will pick up the midrange 2500 mhz frequency from Sprint which holds more speed, less distance...and then they will add the mmwave bands that are for more concentrated areas and has much higher speed but doesn't travel far.
Launching 5G is a marathon not a sprint and takes time to unfold using Low-Mid and High Band frequencies ...

Looked at a 5G phone Unlocked phone on Best Buy's Web site.

It showed it was on Verizons Web site.

So I guess we used to have unlocked phones that was sim locked.
We finally got the sims unlocked so we can use any sims cards in the phone.

But now we are at 5G.
And the 5G is locked to the 5G carrier that it comes with

The 5 G phones are not 5G unlocked.

This really makes me get up set if the carriers has done this.

The government needs to take the phones over since we need to play games with carriers.

Not sure i understand a the S20+ and Ultra, Unlocked have the Frequencies for ALL 5G bands that all 3 carriers are using for the foreseeable future. The carriers can make you purchase a higher priced 5G Data Plan to get access on their 5G system (as AT&T already does) but the radios are all in there...

Thank you.

Yeah I heard some carriers do. T-mobile doesn't make you change your plan nor do they charge you more.

Correct, that is why I chose T-Mobile as I have a Prepaid plan with them and get 5g with no extra upcharge. Verizon and AT&T force you to go with one of their higher cost Unlimited Plans if you want 5g

Edinburgh, Scotland.

4G+ tops out 290/30 or so.
5G max seen 500/40.

Not interested in max speed, more the fact that 5G is still "quiet". Getting more consistent signal in more places.

This is ridiculous. I understand asymmetric networks, but download is almost 200x faster?

Makes sense, but I am not a fan of calling something 5G That shows literally almost zero speed increases.

My wife's 4G LTE consistently beats my 5G speeds. That's not acceptable, and I'm not sure why this isn't considered am outright lie.

Well, IMO...this all started years ago when T-Mobile called their HSPA+ or (3G+) ... 4G. Most were all in agreement that true 4G was LTE
AT&T took them to court and I can’t even recall what happened ...now AT&T calls their LTE+, 5GE ?
I agree with you that the the naming conventions should reflect exactly what the system is...its just the world we live in where the truth is stretched...
