LG G Pad 8.3 Hands-On

NICE!!!!

edit: looks like someone opened it lol

Nice catch. The sales rep opened it for me to hold. Very premium feel, especially with the aluminum. Much easier to hold then the Note 8 and almost as easy one-handed as my 2012 N7. I sure hope Amazon sells this or I'll have to go back to Best Buy.

Processors are always "aging". You can never keep up with the latest processor. Plus, the G Pad uses the same processor as the N7, only clocked at a higher speed. Do the reviewers ever say that the N7 has an aging processor?

Yes. About 7 hours of Rip Tide G2, continuous use, or several Netflix movies.

Last question...maybe. Did you fully charge out the box before use or just jumped into downloading apps and such?

I charged up a few minutes later after I put my Google account info in, so I could sync while charging. The charger charges it up fully in about an hour.

So just in case anyone was wondering, I contacted LG support and asked for an estimated release date for an official LG branded case. This is the response I received:

"Thank you for contacting LG Electronics,

We will be more than happy to assist you. You can purchase the cover with your direct provider or you can get if from Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more

I hope this information is helpful.

Carl G."

Eh, not so much Carl. So I hit up LG's support live chat, and was told "we don't receive any information on products until the are released". So I'm 0 for 2. It stands to reason that since they showed off an LG branded case when they announced the tablet, we shouldn't have long to wait, but who knows?

Well, CNET's review of the G Pad is out:

LG G Pad 8.3 Review - Watch CNET's Video Review

It's pretty lame. As someone who owns a N7 2012, and was thinking of getting the N7 2013 (not anymore), I think she misses the mark entirely. I find it amazing how some of these reviews always compare the G Pad to the N7 2013 when it's primary competition is really the Note 8 which has poorer specs, aside from the nice stylus option, and costs the same if not more then the G Pad. It is also comparable to the new Ipad Mini retina which is still more expensive. The G Pad is not meant to be some crappy sub $200.00 8 inch Android tablet. There are plenty out there. I am interested in it because it specs out nicely against the N7 2013, plus it has additional hardware in the form of the IR remote, and most importantly, Micro SD. Is the $80.00 difference between the N7 2013 32gb model and the G Pad worth the "expensive" $349.00 price? In my mind, of course! It also specs out nicely against the Note 8 and Ipad Mini, its primary competition. Some of the commenters and reviewers on these other sites are ridiculous.

Does the QPair provide a hotspot-like connectivity?

Yes, it does, but only if your phone provider allows it. I've read some reviews that indicated AT&T would not allow their G2 to hotspot link via Q Pair with the G Pad (and probably any other device). Q Pair is done via bluetooth so I assume your phone provider would have to allow for hotspot via bluetooth if you are not rooted. If you are rooted like I am with a WiFi hotspot hack then you can tell them to pound sand. I've used my WiFi hotspot extensively while travelling. I haven't tried bluetooth so whenever I get this thing I'll have to give a try with Q Pair.

Thanks. My company's business plan allows for hotshot usage so I'm covered. Glad to know it is included with the qpair so there isn't another step involved in pairing. This tablet is looking better and better as a G2 companion. My N7 is running fine though and my DH doesn't understand my fascination with this type of tech. Will have to work on him.

Seems like many of the reviews, overall they really like the tablet but are not really comparing apples to apples. Granted I always felt regardless of the spec the sweet spot to price this really was $299 for more mass appeal. That said I think $349 is a fair price given the specs, but many people will pass it by because of the price point.

The G Pad is a "premium" tablet at the end of the day, it as you said was not meant to directly compete with the N7, it was geared to beat out the Note 8 (which in almost every case it does) and go up against the Ipad mini which it matches up very well against and is cheaper.

For me I am still a bit torn of what to do, I love the form factor of this unit however I already own a 2012 N7...so at this point I am either picking this G pad up OR waiting for the 2013 N10.
