LG G2 - GPS Issues

Mine does this as well. Seems like a problem with the compass. I noticed its off sometimes and when I recalibrate it seems to work much better for a while.

I'm about a week in with the Lg G2 for Verizon and so far I'm pretty happy with it. The speakers are good enough (I traded in the HTC One for it), the screen is sharp and really good, and the camera is really, really good. However, I am have had two big issues with the phone, the first is call quality (people are saying I go in and out of being muffled as if I am putting my hand on the microphone) and the second issue is that I am having an absolutely horrible time with the GPS.

I live in Atlanta, have clear views of the sky, and I am unable to use Navigation (used almost daily to get around the daily traffic buildups on the interstate) because it freezes routinely or is delayed or even ahead of where I am at. I literally had to make 3 different U-turns this past weekend when driving to find some small restaurants and my friend's new house.

GPS Status and GPS Test both say that there are 15 satellites in view (from my office right now) and I have had my phone trying to connect to them for ~5 minutes now, and so far nothing. The HTC One and my old Galaxy Nexus would connect immediately and had no issues whatsoever.

Has anyone else had poor experience with the GPS? Is this fixable via a software update? I'd hate to return the phone, but if the GPS can't improve then I will have to end up doing so.

thanks all!

Off topic a bit, but I'm curious what are some of the things about the HTC One that made you want to trade it in? I'm still trying to decide if the One is for me or not, since seeing these issues with the LG G2.

I just got an LG G2 today and it's replacing an HTC One, so hope you don't mind if I chime in here on my first impressions regarding the two. What initially intrigued me about it enough to try it despite how much I liked my One were it's speed, small dimensions for having such a large screen, excellent camera, and some interesting sounding UI features (albeit surrounded by lots of dross)

First, in general, I was a little bit nervous at first with all the clutter and crap on the LG G2 (t-mobile version in my case), but after an hour of clean-up, arranging, playing with options, etc. I was much happier with it and my enthusiasm has continued to increase the more I play around with it.

Things I miss from the HTC One:
  • Speakers
  • In some ways the G2 is very comfortable to hold, but overall the HTC One has a better handfeel
  • Sense is a more elegant UI than LG's. Surprised how much I miss BlinkFeed.
  • I miss Zoes and Highlights.

Things I prefer about the LG G2 so far:
  • The HTC One has a fantastic screen, and I'm surprised to be saying this, but I like the LG G2's screen more. Significantly larger, but with those razor thin side bezels it doesn't feel much bigger, and it's absolutely stunning. (Apple likes to use that adjective a lot, I think the G2's screen genuinely deserves it!)
  • Performance: Once again the HTC One was excellent, but the LG G2 is noticeably better. For example the site forecast.io was very jumpy on my HTC One, but runs much more smoothly on the G2. There's a slots game I play (Jackpot Party) that doesn't seem particularly well optimized, and it was sometimes hitchy on the HTC One but runs faster on the G2.
  • Camera is significantly better. Haven't had time to play with it much, but quick auto shots are much more impressive IMO. More than makes up for not having Zoes & Highlights.
  • Buttons on the back: took me all of 5 minutes to get used to them and I love them. Very easy to feel what's what, and much less awkward to use. Also, double-tapping the phone to wake/sleep it is a great feature. Much easier than reaching for that top edge power button.
  • LG's UI may be overwrought, but there's some features I appreciate: e.g. having text messages appear in a little pop-up window so I can reply and dismiss without switching apps is really nice, keeping screen on while looking at it works well for me. (Tho pause/resume video based on where you're looking was not so good)
  • Battery life: Shaping up to be fantastic. Typical first day use: lots of camera play, video watching, browsing, all my initial setup and app downloading etc etc, have NFC, Bluetooth, GPS going, and even with all that usage I'm on track for 13 hours before needing my first charge. Who knows how it'll hold up in the long term but waaaay more than *any* other phone has given me on a first charge.
  • Haven't plugged in after my first charge yet, but if it charges as fast as most people say then that'll be a nice plus over the HTC One too.

Overall, very happy with the change and absolutely no regrets. I'm hoping I'll say the same thing a couple months from now. We'll see! :)

Oh, and to be a bit on-topic: GPS is working excellently so far. My One could occasionally be sluggish in getting oriented but so far it's been very quick with my G2

GPS doesn't work for me. It keeps searching for a GPS signal and when and if it does find a signal its never accurate. It'll say I've turned down a road even though i haven't and then I'll take ages to update. I hope they bring out a fix soon....

To the earlier poster asking, I have Verizon.

Since I initially posted I am having a bit better luck -- but it still takes at least 30+ seconds to lock with an average usually over a minute. Navigation is still really tough as it always says "GPS SIGNAL LOST" whenever I am at a red light or stop for a period of time. It also seems to be off while driving about a block or two which makes navigating in big cities tough.

Current GPS Status:
Satellites: 10/20
Error: 11m
Magnetic field: 45/50 uT
Time to first fix: 37 seconds
(I do wonder if this lower time is attributed to the weather widgets I am running which pulls my location to give me the current temp

As for switching from the HTC One:
I wanted to "future proof" myself by having the snapdragon 800 (yes, specs don't always matter but I wanted to be in a position to hopefully take advantage of the always-on features that are rumored to be in KitKat and I wanted something that would last 2 years) and I wanted a bigger screen size without a noticeably larger size. Plus, the 4 megapixel camera wasn't producing images as big as I would like. Yes, they looked good, but at a smaller size. The camera on the G2, in my opinion, is much better.

I'm having the same issue. Great phone otherwise but this is critical to my business. I called Verizon and spent over an hour on phone with them. They couldn't figure out what problem is. They suggested I get a replacement phone. What a pain.

Seems like it is software and hardware on the verizon model. I am using Malladus rom and it has made it workable to get enough lock most of the time now.

Mine has been really hit and miss. Definitely never had an issue like this with my S3. Thinking about bringing it to Verizon and asking for a replacement.

Hi, i am from switzerland and have the international version and love everything exept gps.
Gps locks fast, but looses signal after a few minutes and then it takes ages until it finds it again. Also sometimes it tells me i am kilometers away from where i actually am.

I will get a replacement device because have dead pixel, so i can update you if its a general problem or just many defective ones...

This really sucks I wanted to get the phone but a good GPS is important to me. I hope LG addresses this quickly

Hi,

I have also GPS instabilities when I drive.
Sometimes I lose sync and the GPS goes crazy...

Did you find a solution to this problem ?

Thanks

Someone said it could be compass problem, is there a compass app or something you can pull out and check if it is pointing right direction?
Also in some gps devices you have to set your magnetic north for gps to work properly, I wonder if it is not calibrated properly or if it is Korea-based magnetic north? Has anyone ever called or emailed LG about this issue, you know talking about these problems on forums like these won't fix it, especially if no other forum member was able to come up with a solution after a few months.

I have also just started having issues with the GPS not working right so I have left it on and it still takes longer then it used to to lock on any suggestions

Those with gps issues, just curious if you have wifi on even while you are driving with gps? I believe google maps gets uses wifi location to help for this very reason. If the compass appears to be off, have you tried the figure 8 waving trick to calibrate it?

I heard that rolling back to the original maps version may fix it. Remove all updates for the app.

I find it weird that when I go into the options that the GPS is also Verizon location services on my DNA it says standalone GPS I wonder if this could be the issue

the minute I got my G2, I began having GPS issues. I'm in the Cleveland area and couldn't get it to lock, ever, to a single satellite. I travel for work and have been out to New York City, Hartford (CT), and Philadelphia and never got locks out there, either. I've had the phone replaced twice now. Each new (or like-new) replacement I get from Verizon ends up not locking on, either. They're convinced it's software, even though their display model can lock on no problem, and is running the same software version mine is on. Albeit, their display is the white model and bears a different kernel version, which I'm told could mean it's from a separate 'batch' at the manufacturer. (???)

I just got my 3rd 'like new' replacement today, and after 8 minutes on the highway, driving home, for the first time since owning it, the phone locked on to 8-10 satellites and actually followed me home. It was incredible. I felt like it was the late 2000s again.
I haven't been able to replicate that since... however.

I sent LG an email, and they suggested going through Verizon to get a replacement. But if the problem keeps recurring, then to send it to them, on my dime I believe. I just keep going to the Verizon store, and will continue to do so until I get one that works or I get a better option. Not to steal an hour of your time to read my depressing story, but I figure it's worth documenting on here. 3 LG G2 phones, all with GPS problems.

I just received my replacement phone from Verizon and shocker the GPS still won't lock. I will be going in to process another and will do this over and over till I get a working phone. Serious pain but oh well.

I'm on the T-mobile version of the G2 and haven't had much luck with the GPS.
Since i dont regularly use my GPS it took me a couple of months after i had the phone to figure out my GPS wasn't working.
after i noticed it not working I tried multiple things like clearing the cache and data in google maps, restarting the phone, toggling the GPS, etc. and no luck
I read several blogs suggesting uninstalling the updates to Google maps fixed the issue, tried it & still no fix
I called T-mobile and ran through all their steps and they finally told me that it was most likely due to some apps I had installed on the phone that was screwing with the GPS.
I told them I have the exact same (if not a few less) apps that I have installed on my Galaxy S3 and it does not have any issues. but they told me a factory rest was the only way. so I factory rest my device and still no fix for the GPS. so they sent me a replacement and I thought everything would be okay.
i even tested the GPS when the phone got there and things seemed to function fine, so sent the old one back and was happy using the new one....until I tried navigation on my phone.
the damn thing kept losing the lock every 1 to 2 minutes and wouldn't find itself again.
so called T-mobile again and their solution was to factor reset the device and try it then.
so i decided to do more testing on what might be causing the problems, like having bluetooth on at the same time, streaming music, wifi on, etc. all of them yielded no results.
finally tried it while riding with my friend as I was holding it and alas it worked, no lost signal or problem keeping the lock.
I though this was too good to be true and placed it on the seat and took my hands off it. and just like clockwork it lost the lock within a minute and couldnt find itself again. picked it up and held it and it started working again. i got the same results as holding it when i placed it up on the dash next to the windscreen.
so in the end it seems to be the signal strength of the GPS chip in the G2 as I could place my Galaxy S3 anywhere in the car or the seat and it would work. so im going to test this a bit better and call in to T-mobile to see what they'll do.
Please let me know if holding the phone up or placing it on the dash gets you good & consistent results. ( i don't recommend holding the phone while driving, try the dash or have a friend hold it)

Sorry for making this so long but figured I'd make this as detailed as i could to avoid back and forth information gathering.

My only problem with GPS is that it keeps turning on by itself (or triggered by an app).. And I can't tell which app.. This is annoying.
