LG G3 New Android User - Question about temperature

I just switched from the iPhone 5 to the LG G3. I love pretty much everything about this phone. My only question is about the temperature of the phone. The only time it felt really warm was when it was on the charger and I was downloading a lot of apps. I have downloaded system monitor lite and cpu temp. My battery temps are averaging 87° F and my CPU is averaging around 105-120. However, when it was on the charger and I was using it quite a bit, the CPU's temp was staying around 140 and even spiked to 170. So my two questions are:

1. Is this normal?
2. Should I be monitoring the battery temperature, CPU temperature, or both, and if so, what range should I be looking for.

As I just purchased the phone, I want to make sure that I do not have a defective model before my 14 day grace period expires.

Thanks in advance!

170 is rather hot. I'm not sure how you were holding it at that time =0

Most phones have a shut off feature in which the device powers off when it gets too hot. A lot of phones get warm when you use them at the same time they are charged. I've had my phone get up to 115, but never 170. I don't think your phone is defective, but I think you should tone down the usage when the G3 is charging.

Re: New Android User - Question about temperature

I just had my G3 replaced by AT&T and got it on 9/23. Just sent my old one back today 9/27.
They sent one to me with shipping and return shipping prepaid.
The phones come with a 1 year warranty so even if you go past the 14 days you can still get another one.
The G3 I bought had a huge problem overheating and shutting down with random reboots and lag.

What to watch for on the battery:
140F is too high!!
What to watch for on the CPU:
160F-up is to high!!!

My replacement is running at CPU 95-120F & Battery at 80F-95*

Try playing a video on you tube for 3 hours and see how hot it gets and if it shuts down it has a problem.

Re: New Android User - Question about temperature

I will definitely try playing a long video and monitoring the temperature. I just tested taking a 50 sec video and the cpu temp (at least according to the app mentioned above) went to 150. During this time, the battery only rose to 91° F. Shortly after finishing the video the temp went down under 120. The other poster mentioned that his phone has gotten over 115 though it sounded like that was a rare occurrence. CpuTemp is indicating that my phone is idling around 115. Is this much higher than your G3?

I was referring to another device being 115 degrees, not the G3 specifically. Like the other person said, watched for really high temperatures like 140 and above. I'd even watch for 130 as well.

I am using this right now.

This shows both the CPU/BATTERY temps also MHz and mb.

On my original G3 I was using two different xposed modules to get the info.

So I downloaded that widget and performed some more tests. During a video test, my CPU remained around 115F. When doing things like downloading an app or taking video, the CPU would sometimes briefly rise to around 150F (it also briefly rose to 140F while taking a picture). When playing a non-intensive game (plague) the CPU remained at 140F. With that being said, the battery never rose above 99F. So should I be good with this specific phone or should I be worried with the CPU temperature spikes?

Thanks again

We need more people to monitor their CPU temps.
I would keep and eye on it and see if it gets passed 150F.
In my experience the phone tends to shut down after 160F.

Prior to making my first post, my CPU briefly rose to 170F (the battery stayed under 100F). However, despite the high temperature, I did not receive a warning and my phone did not shut off.

Re: New Android User - Question about temperature

After two months, lately I'm getting random temperatures hitting 90-100. Seems to be the Location that's causing it.

Is this the battery or CPU temp?

That is still not normal operating temperature, if you have any reboots or shutdowns or have to remove the battery for any reason, then you have a defective phone.

So that raises the question, should I swap the phone out or simply wait And see? It hasn't shut off or given me a warning yet.

Also, is there any chance my 32gb Samsung sd card is causing this?

Mine didn't start overheating until after the 14 days.
Once I started really using it. The sd card shouldn't be causing problems but you never know.
Try the phone out without it, then see what temps you get.
The G3 is future proofed up to 2 Terabytes and right now can use 128gb.
I would question the hardware of the phone before I question the sd card.
