LG G3 vs HTC One M8 vs Lumia 1020 vs (future) Note 4

Better screen ,better battery life , better design IMO than the m8 and the note 4, however, if I were you, it makes sense to wait for the note 4 so you can compare the software features and screen then make a final decision

I think the G3 has a lot going for it, more so than the M8. Impossible at this point to say anything about the Note4.
The M8 is an unusually large phone for such a small screen (4.75" with on screen buttons). Though the G3 has on screen buttons it begins at 5.5" still leaving you with a screen over 5" while the on screen buttons are present. The large, empty black area under the screen on the M8 is unsightly. The M8 is similar in size to the Note 3 but the N3 has a 5.7" screen. Why have a phone that large (M8) if the real estate is wasted?
And lastly, as you mentioned the awful camera....hard to get passed that one. The front facing speakers are great but ask yourself how much will you really use them. I have a HTC One M7 as a backup, when it was my primary I hardly used the speakers at all (but that's just me).
I like you am eagerly awaiting the G3 and the Note 4, compared to the M8 I don't think you can go wrong with either.

The Note 4 isn't even out and you're saying this has a better design without even seeing the 4?

Do you really think they've had time to change the design of the note 4 drastically when they just fired their head of design in the middle of the development process?

I'm expecting it to look similarly to the s5, with a different style back plate or something, in which case, the g3 still wins

Anyone have an M8 that is considering getting the G3?

I've had the M8 for about a week and a half. It's definitely a different/awesome phone than my Thunderbolt, but I'm seriously considering the G3, even over the S5. I got the M8 for its fast shutter speed (which is fast), but I can't really deal with the 4MP camera--I want better quality than that. I was seriously considering the G2 because of its good low-light/night pics, but the G3 with an external SD card was the clincher. Now I just have to return the M8, get another (maybe try the S5 for 2 weeks), return that, etc., until the G3 comes out in July (hopefully, I'm on Verizon with a new contract).

Yeah, hard to say exactly but I would put my money on the Note 4 looking very similar to every other Samsung device ever made.
I happily own a Note 3 but have no problem admitting that Samsung has very little design ingenuity.
Something else to consider, they just released the S series of tablets and as innovative as the screen, software and internal hardware is they basically made it look like a giant S5. I see their point of view though, why make drastic design and material changes when people will buy whatever they put out.

I didn't say they had a new design.. But assuming usually isn't the best. Can we guess that it'll be similar? For sure... Especially from their track record... But it doesn't make it 100% until it comes from them :).

Of course nothing is guaranteed, but it would be wishful thinking for them to have a design that is as good as the g3 IMO , especially with that ugly home button still making it's presence known

I actually really preferred the home button. I liked having the actual button and still do. Though I can see how (with the G3) the on screen buttons can be useful.

I agree with @Soundtrack to Chaos All Samsung's devices are very similar. I am thinking they are going to make a big S5 with the Note 4. Just because that is what they have done with the rest of them. If they do, then I am definitely going to have to rethink even thinking about getting the Note 4 because I absolutely hate the S5 as much as I hate Justin Bieber. GAHH!

Wow! I haven't heard about the Thunderbolt in a while. That is an old device! hahahaha.
Yeah, now that I know that the G3 can hold up to a 2TB (which I didn't even know existed) MicroSD card, it can Wirelessly charge, and it has everything else, I am really thinking about getting it. I can't wait for it to come out actually!

Yeah, it is. Wait... it has a smaller screen than my S4? Why would I even consider getting it then? Seriously? Doesn't the S4 have a 4.99" screen size? That is almost a quarter of an inch different... Holy crap.

I agree. The real estate is being wasted by on screen buttons and that unsightly black bar that does nothing but advertises the HTC brand....

That is true... While it would be nice to have them, now that I have the Chromecast, I probably wouldn't use them all that often. I'd just cast the stuff I want to watch to my TV and then watch it there....

Thanks for all of the good info @BBSeattle! You really opened my eyes and helped me decide I am definitely getting the G3 when it comes out. Pre-ordering it even. :)

I would but it is probably going to be a huge S5 with a pencil that I'll probably lose. lol. I think I have decided on the G3!

I wasn't sure where to put this so I decided to put it here. Mods can move it to a better place if it needs to be moved. :)

Anyway, I am due for an upgrade and I am thinking about getting the LG G3 or the HTC One M8 but I want to see what you guys say about the devices.

Here are my Pros & Cons for each.
LG G3-
Pros:
1) 4 buttons at the bottom
2) 5.5 inch screen (I want a bigger phone than 5 inches with this upgrade)
3) Popup messages that you can reply to that do this BY DEFAULT
4) Removable/Replacable Battery
5) MicroSD Card Slot
6) Never used it on my S4 but it is cool... Wireless Charging
7) Takes the same SIM card as my S4 (Micro) so if I were to return or something happened to it I could easily put it back in my S4.

Cons:
1) Speaker on the back. Tired of my S4 with that speaker.
2) Review on PocketNow states that default Weather app is usually wrong. I liked that weather app.
3) Buttons on the back. Not sure about those.
4) Never used it on my S4 but it is cool... No NFC

HTC One M8
Pros:
1) Speakers on the front
2) HTC phones last forever!
3) MicroSD Card Slot

Cons:
1) Only 3 buttons on the bottom
2) Never used it on my S4 but it is cool... No Wireless Charging
3) Since it takes a smaller SIM card (Nano), I can't switch back and forth between my S4 if something happened to the One M8.
4) Stupid HTC bar that does nothing and will confuse the living HELL out of me until I get used to the device.

As you can tell from the Pros & Cons list I am leaning more towards the LG G3 but the speaker is killing me. I hate having to place my phone down on it's face in order to hear the speaker how it is supposed to be...or cup my hand to hear it in a restaurant or busy place.

I am also considering the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 when it comes out but I am impatient and not sure I can wait that long. Lol. Plus, I wanted to try and get away from Samsung with this upgrade. I've owned their S3 & S4 and have major problems with Touchwiz/hardware that is in them. BOTH versions I've had major issues.

Also, considering the Nokia Lumia 1020. While T-Mobile doesn't sell this, I could purchase it outright and use it. Reason why I don't is because I am an indecisive person so I like the customization that Android has BUT I owned the HTC HD7 (Windows 7/Vista device) and actually kept that phone for 2-years...as opposed to the 6 months to 1 year of the devices since.

Anyway, I wanted to know what y'all think. In your opinion, from what I have put here, Which phone do you think I should get? I want to make it one I will not return within the first 14 days. I want to try and keep it for 2-years as well and that is hard with the Android OS becoming outdated so fast.

G3 speaker slightly better than Flex I heard...as in better than S4 and such. They use curves to improve the sound when sitting on its back....not muffled. M8 is stereo front, really it needs a good desk dock that turns it into a clock radio type device when charging. If you use headphones, LG has a good track record with less crosstalk in the analog jack. We really need a standard for USB or HDMI headphones for Android by now, especially with Apple moving to digital headphones soon.

G3 early snaps, I feel certain shades of red are getting overenhanced. (Blown out) Then again G2 and especially Flex sometimes put in too much blue so meh. That's what retouches are for, and the M8 doesn't take pictures with a lot of room left to do that. It also overexposes too easily in bright light, but the camera profiles can be set to mitigate this reliably. Hoping the G3 HDR is like the Flex, it's actually great out on the water in bright sun. Without, got dark water and blown out relection of sun. With, the water and sky were normalized and there were crisp dark waves inside the reflection on the water...not bad on a power boat and without OIS. So the G3 should be even better in places like that.

All that said, I for one will probably skip the G3 and wait on the rumored Flex 2. Six inches fits my hand well and I hope they keep the multifunction rear buttons...HTC is nuts to still put power on the top edge, and it does stick out enough to get bumped. G3 looks refined but I think the glowing wart is easier to hit. Well, I'll put off judging that until I get more than two minutes to play with one.

It has been reported time and time again that the Note 4 is going to be a break from the normal Galaxy Design language. You cannot go wrong with your choice which is fortunate, but if YOUM comes about you could be left with a little buyers remorse.

I'd go for the Lumia 1020 because of the really great price and big value. Or you wait for the next generation, Lumia 1030 (or whatever it's called). Since the old WP7 years, a lot has changed, and I think WP8.1 is now really mature. Good luck!
