My phone over heated today for the first time, does anyone know if that will hurt my phone? Is this common?

Weird.
Which carrier? What were you doing when this occurred?

Mav.

Sent from the future on my Sprint LG G3.

It will not hurt the phone (generally speaking) but will degrade the battery cells.

I'm curious how people are getting the phone to overheat. Maximum brightness for extended periods outside in the sun/heat? I've played with the phone at max brightness for an extended period of time, and although the phone feels quite warm, I've never had any heat warnings appear.

I am interested in how people are able to activate the thermal sensor... I am streaming Netflix on hd for hours with 100 % brightness and no warning as of yet....

A lot of owners are experiencing this issue but it's also fair to mention that many are not.....
Not sure what the reason is for those that are.
A common theme amongst some here is to simply deny the phenomenon or say that there simply is no overheating becasue theirs doesn't or that those experiencing the problem are delusional and/or the problems are self induced due to operator error (in spite of the myriad of owners claiming to have experienced the problem while operating the phone per design).
In other words, good luck getting any helpful input here.

I think a lot is an overstatement a few would be much more accurate

The things that are never divulged is if they are using stock launcher?
Did they turn off the thermal throttling?
Was the phone sitting on the car dash?
What other apps are running at the same time? I.e GPS, streaming, brightness level, data transfers?

The more information the better...
I suspect the reason we don't hear or are given more detailed experiences is because that either the users understand they are using the phones incorrectly or expect something that is totally unreasonable.

I have read where folks are leaving the phone on the dash baking in the sun while driving and then wondering why the phone is shutting down? If you need an explanation about why something is not working properly, try leaving a g-shock or any smart watch in the dash of your car for an hour in the sun and see hot well it works??

I have a friend who has an M8 who has the same issue when using GPS with the phone on a dash mount while it's hot out. Guess what happens after about 20 minutes?? Especially if its charging or streaming music.... It shuts down due to temperature.. Even if it's not doing anything but using gps, it will shut down..

Granted, some folks are reporting issues with the phone just streaming and shutting down or taking videos etc...
It's not unreasonable to be grumpy if this issue comes up, the phone should not fail in this way. I have read it gets hot while charging, that is also unacceptable for a device to be behaving in that way.

The more information the community has the better chance a usable answer can be forthcoming from some of the better hobbist who frequent the threads.

I watched the same issues when the G2 first came out, also with the S3, S4, Note 3.....

Seems like overheating is more common than not.
Mine overheats a lot with or without thermal throttling on.
Stock launcher, rooted, xposed, debloated and greenified.
Everything running is limited but it still overheats.
I don't know how accurate the xposed cpu temp module is but mine is always in the 150F-175F range.
I haven't even played any games on it, it just heats up using normal stock apps even.
Lots of freezing and lag.
I have tried everything to get it running smooth but its a no go.
Hope an update fixes these issues.
Android OS and sometimes Android System seem to be battery hogs.
With the thermal throttle trick it runs smoother but still overheats.
I have never seen a heat warning, it just shuts down and reboots.
I had to remove the battery once to get it to turn on again.
Hope this was enough info.

I rooted and installed xposed and G3 tweaks. After a few hours my phone started acting weird to the point it was unenjoyable. I uninstalled xposed and G3 tweaks and all went back to normal. Then I reinstalled them to see if that was the culprit and sure enough it happened again. So I uninstalled again and all is fine.

To let ya know, if your phone was reaching 150 - 175 degrees F, your phone after a while would start to melt! So either xposed is wrong or your phone has got serious issues.

From what three xposed modules tell me.
My battery is always about 85-111F
My CPU is 110-175F
Seems like CPU sticks at max 2.5ghz a lot, sometimes it acts ok but most it sticks.

These xposed modules can be a little off but not by much.

My phone overheats and I can feel it. Makes me want to smash it against the wall.
While its overheating it lags.

This is either a bad phone or a lot of people have bad G3's.
Hopefully they will fix this throttling issue because its not working.

Also there is no point in buying the G3 if you cant install simple apps.

My 4 year old LG NITRO performed better than this and did not get this hot.
