LG G4: Farewell, it was an OK experience

You said it all when you said T Mobile.... they blow balloons Bud!! My G4 on Verizon is stunning in all areas, Not a single issue you had with yours. You couldn't give me T Mobile for free.

Dude you might be at work but if your steaming that much data, your not working... Quit ripping off your employer.

And I wouldn't take Verizon for free. They cripple their devices worse than anyone and add their hideous logo everywhere. Different strokes.

Oh and my T-Mobile G4 is working flawlessly.

I am not ripping off my employer. I do all my work and assist customers daily -- I just have streams going. Do I keep them going and afk 10 mins to do something? Sometimes yes.

Please do not judge me on my data usage as you know nothing of what I do so assuming I am "ripping off my employer" is very inaccurate.

Where do you live?

You list battery life as a con on the G4. Why couldn't you apply the same strategy mentioned above on the S6 to the G4?

I would offer that, currently, G4 charging seems very slow. My stock charger and cable typically give me 280mA with the screen on (and for car navigation, that's realistic). Meaning about 10 hours for a full charge, and barely raising the charge level in any reasonable amount of time.

So quick charging isn't really something we have at the moment, from what I've seen.

On the stock charger, screen on, Battery Widget typically reports about 3 minutes to gain 1%. That is not quick, in my book. Currently, it's showing me 12 minutes for 1%.

I really like the phone, no lag problems here. But charging seems extremely slow for me so far. I'm really hoping a software patch can fix this. Mine is Verizon.

Verizon is no doubt the best for coverage but I stream all day and use on average 120GB a month. I can't do that on Verizon, well I could if I wanted a mortgage payment for a cell phone bill.

Yeah Verizon is pretty bad about removing tons of features off phones. Basically saying if you want our service you get what we give you.

For those having issues with the double tap to unlock, I learned something I was unaware of that may help others.

On day 1, I set a knock code instead of a PIN to play around with that. I thought I had to double tap to wake it up, and then enter the knock code. Like others, my double tap was only working 50% of the time. Then after a few days, I learned that you can just do your knock code without the double tap first. Since then, I would say it works about 90% of the time. Maybe because the phone is confusing the double tap as part of the knock code? I don't know, but if you use a knock code, try doing that without the double tap and you may see better results like I did.

Interesting. I have no problem with double tap to wake maybe because I don't use the Knock code? I use connect the dots...

You can keep your Verizon. I tried T-Mobile last year and they weren't very good. Jumped back to them from AT&T a couple months ago and have been very pleasantly surprised. To ignore the progress they've made in upgrading their network is ignorant. Of course they have more holes than Verizon and AT&T but they are quickly closing the gap. Their work is especially impressive here in Texas with the large number of rural areas we have.

lol I don't even know how to Photoshop. Here in Dallas it is not uncommon to see 120+ mbps speeds. Verizon has some pretty good speeds here too but that was the highest I've ever seen.

It makes absolutely no sense. I mean, what compels people to remove native features that people might enjoy? Especially when they have nothing at all to replace it with. I can understand if they had an app similar to Smart Settings that performed the same tasks and they wanted to push it in people's face, but no, nothing.

I am absolutely happy with my T-Mobile G4 and the service.

After using the LG G4 for 7 days I have decided to return it. Unfortunately the phone failed to live up to my expectations in too many areas for me to justify keeping it.

Here are my thoughts on the phone in case anyone wishes to know why.

Pros -
Screen Size - The 5.5 inch display is the sweet spot in my opinion.
Great camera - Processing was super fast when taking pictures
Great looking screen - Colors were great on the phone, nice and soft not too bright in your face.
Great design - Great weight and feel in the hand, the leather backing gave it nice grip.
Call Quality - Was really great on the phone. It was soft and clear when talking on HD voice with no over modulation.

Cons -
Performance was just not up to a flagship phone standard. If I am going to pay $641.97 (Tax included) for a phone it needs to perform great. There was more lag on the phone than I wish to deal with. Apps would sometimes take forever to open, switching between screens would shutter often. LG really needs to go back through the software on this phone and take their time optimizing it correctly.

Touch sensitivity was just terrible on the phone. Double tap to wake was starting to turn into double closed fist smash to wake. What is that you say "IT Guy why not just use the power button" I say to you "Shut your stinking face! you use the power button I want to use double tap to wake!" Just because there are two options for something doesn't mean I have to settle for the other one because one doesn't work all the time.

Battery life wasn't that great on the phone, it would sit at 100% for 45 minutes and then start to sink like the Titanic. For those who say they can get 8 hours of SOT, I say awesome! I have no intent on having my phone brightness at 23% the entire day. Maybe if I was in a dark cave having a riddle battle with Gollum 23% would work but the screen on the phone is just too nice to handicap it at 23% brightness.

Auto brightness on the phone wasn't that great. I felt like the screen was always just a little too dim for my liking. This phone has an awesome screen on it and the auto brightness was starting to ruin it for me. I found myself always having to turn it up just a little more at times.

Forced update - not sure how much of a con this is but some how T-Mobile was able to update my phone like some kind of super ninja. I was reading a forum where users was talking about the update and someone stated that they had the update and didn't even accept it. I looked at my phone and sure enough my phone was already updated. I would have accepted it anyways but still it would have been nice to ask me if i wanted to accept it. I kind of felt violated in some way.

Hopefully my insight pm the phone helps in some way. I really wanted to like the phone but there were just too many issues for me to want to keep it. I will go back to my S6 and wait for the next big flagship to be released. So I bid you farewell LG G4, it was an OK experience.

Almost my exact experience besides the T-Mobile update thing that didn't really bother me.

I think that tomorrow will be my last day, today is my 7th day also and so far your experiences have been the same than mine, reading them was as if you were reading my mind.

Great phone, best LG phone yet, but quite not completely there I'm afraid (in my experience and opinion), in my case battery is the biggest offender and exactly like you, can be at 100% for about 1.5 - 2 hours if I don't use it that much on that time but once it begins to drain, it simply doesn't stop, even the standby time has been worst than it was with my G3, I can understand draining while it is on but on Standby shouldn't drain more than my S6 edge, that has same Apps, settings and Syncs. Lag and stutter have come and go but when it does it's annoying, you get used to the device's performance after a while but it's very evident when I use the S6 edge back for a while, then I can see the difference in performance in general.

Again, I will decide for sure tonight, but if I decide to return it tomorrow (75-25 chances that I will), I'll see you all guys over the S6/S6 edge forums for now until the next big Flagship is released. ;) Take care.

I just love how the OP blames the phone for T-Mobile's update policies.....

I didn't blame the phone for anything. All other updates pushed out for phones don't auto install like that. Most of the blame for performance more than likely was caused by T-Mobile along with the update. Sorry if I felt like I should be asked if I want to install an update. What if my phone was at 2% and it died during the update. What if I was in an accident and needed medical attention and I couldn't call out because I had to wait for the update to install. These are all not likely scenarios but still could happen.

From T-mobile's site

This site will provide updates on the three key stages for new software updates including:
Manufacturer Development
T-Mobile Testing
Completed

Once the update is available your device will provide a notification that the update is available with direction on how to download it. You do not need to contact T-Mobile or the manufacturer. Customer Service uses the same information that customers can access online. Not all devices will be listed on this page for future software updates.
