We all are mad about tech here lol, i would honestly recommend the G4.
But if your unsure check it out in your local store first ??????

Agree with you completely about the screen. Don't get me wrong, it's a great screen, but the brightness is definitely lacking just like it was on the G3. The situation is improved with the G4, and it's certainly not a deal breaker, but it is definitely much dinner than my S6. Great write-up Duncan, looking forward to your final thoughts. So I am almost 1 week into using the G4 and for the most part its very positive.
Disclaimer....
There are and will be varying opinions and experiences as every device will have differences. Some of these differences will be down to carrier, manufacturer & user.
This is my experience and i have very much enjoyed (not past tense) as i am still using my G4 as my daily and that is testament in itself.
I like how Lg builds the larger screen devices and fitting that into a nice and comfy form, for relative ease of use.
The screen does have its flaws and its not that the brightness is poor, i have been using outside in sunlight. Its the Auto brightness that Lg hasn't got right. Whilst its not as bright as the S6E, it can be used outside but the brightness has to be turned from auto to manual and even then it just get there. I put my note here that its a gorgeous display and its an improvement over the G3, but still work to do in that one area.
The Audio is acceptable (headphone) output, I'm using RHA T10's and whilst the sound is good its not as great as the likes of the S6E or the M9. The rear speaker is rich in sound and loud, but not where a speaker should be cough cough M9 front facing lol
The Battery life has been great 5hrs screen on over 13hrs total time is very decent and seems to be my average.
Camera is stellar and a huge huge plus to have nice optics.
With every phone there are elements you will like and others not so much. However for me personally there is very little not to like about the G4 and thus is why I am delighted to have an Lg device again.
