I've used this forum for a long time, so I thought I'd post something back, which I hope will help others.
I've connected a spare 256GB SSD (Crucial M550) to my LG G4 using a powered SATA to USD adaptor. I had to format the disk as FAT32 with 1 primary partition, using a normal Windows PC with EaseUS Partition Master before the LG could recognise the drive. The Android File Manager is by far the fastest tool for copying files from either Internal storage or the SD card. The standard (simple) music app is happy to read from the USB disk. Hope that helps somebody out there!
