I am a pixel user who just recently picked up the G6 as a second phone because I love the ergonomics of it. Easy to hold flat screen phones are a rarity these days and I am glad LG is still making them.

I find the camera to be great in bright light outdoors. Photos are very comparable to the Pixel in terms of detail, though Google's HDR is a step ahead. Indoors, I get mixed results. Some photos turn out well and some absolutely poor. The inconsistency indoors is a bit of a concern.

Indoors,

I find that

  • Turning HDR off produces better photos.
  • And I almost always have to use burst mode because shutter speed indoors seems very slow and there is always motion blur.
  • Using "simple mode" produces less noise than regular auto mode.

Are my observations consistent with what others here are experiencing with the G6s? Any other tips for better and more consistent indoor photos?

It's good to mess around with the manual feature and get good at that.

Yup, I have been experimenting with ISO and shutter speed quite a bit. But manual is only useful when you have time to sit and compose a shot. Manual almost always is not useful for on-the-fly candid shots when kids are playing as you don't have time to sit there and tweak settings and watch the moment pass you by.

I too have both the Pixel and the G6 and I agree with what you said. Spontaneous shooting from the hip the Pixel does better in low light for sure (though high noise in my experience), and in daylight the HDR on the pixel is more aggressive.

But, if you have the time to compose the shot the manual controls on the G6 can't be beat. If I have the time I can get a much cleaner night shot with the G6 in manual vs the Pixel which I find jacks the ISO so high to maintain a fast shutter speed that it can ruin the shot with excessive noise.

Overall I'd say I have more fun with the camera on the G6. That wide-angle lens is just so damn handy.

Managed to catch this shot after a thunderstorm rolled through the area forcing a ground stop. Had to shoot quickly from the hip as the post ground stop scramble was beginning.

Agreed. The pixel can't be beat for detail though, a 12 mp lens with no OIS simply should not be picking up that much detail! Says a lot about Google's software prowess.

Taking Jeremiah Bond's suggestion above, I have been experimenting with the G6 manual controls. Indoors, in artificial light with moving kids - a real weak spot for the G6 auto mode - I have been cranking up ISO to 400, and shortening shutter speed to 1/40. It under exposes the shot, but I then post process in the Photoshop app by increasing brightness along with reducing noise. It seems to do the trick. See the photos below - I cannot pull off similar shots in auto no matter how many bursts I try - there is a lot of motion blur and high degree of noise.

The Pixel will rattle these same shots all day without even trying in full auto. The G6 manual controls are fun to play with, but a lot of work that's for sure.

Once you get the hang of it, you'll be good..
