LG Nexus

LOL.

I hope you know that you can't really say what is a better technology because you couldn't get service in a basement.

Curious, did you try a Verizon LTE phone down there too?

In my building, Verizon customers get service throughout. AT&T customers rely on micro cells all over the place. T-Mobile customers have to go outside to use their phones.

That doesn't tell me that CDMA is better than GSM. It tells me Verizon has better coverage.

Seriously, look up how CDMA splits up the signal. Look up how CDMA handles tower to tower transitions.

But please don't come back with a coverage argument.

Hey, did I say "VZW doesn't have the best coverage in the US"? It does! Buy it doesn't work well in basements in Chicago for reason. Not only mine. I've heard many people complaining about that.

The other bad thing about CDMA is locked phones. When you use a GSM network you may buy an unlocked phone or even remove a SIM lock and use it. In CDMA networks a provider may not accept phones which they did not sell.

And the last thing - international roaming. Nearly whole world is using GSM so if you go to Europe let's say, you'll end up with no roaming and no network.

Verizon IS the best company in US if it comes to coverage, internet speed, dropped calls. But there are bad sides as well.

It is bad. For instance VZW doesn't work well in basements. That's why I went with a GSM phone because I occupied a basement unit in Chicago and VZW had no coverage there.

By the way by 2014 VZW is going to finish covering the entire country with LTE transmitters and then they will launch VoLTE and disable CDMA....

It says VoLTE will take off well before 2021.

And they are planning to start rolling it out in 2013.
Verizon aims for voice over LTE in late 2013, early 2014 - Operating\cn-c114 ?? C114 - China Communication Network

And there's where you said CDMA will die when VoLTE launches (no, not directly, but it was definitely implied by your wording). They can't get rid of CDMA until they have everybody off of CDMA only phones and on phones that are capable of VoLTE.

All right, I won't be arguing over that because it's obvious people will need time to be given to switch their phones to LTE-capable ones.

BTW is an LTE phone ready to use VoLTE? Or this needs to be built in/software installed?

The reason it doesn't work in basements in Chicago probably has less to do with CDMA and more with actual network coverage.

How is Sprint in basements in Chicago? How is Verizon LTE service in basements in Chicago?

Re: SIMs and international roaming, those are issues with how CDMA service was implemented, not issues with the actual technology behind CDMA.

Don't know. All I know is I had to switch to TMO because of lack of coverage under the ground. Tmo had all bars in the basement. Back then there was no LTE. But few people who I know did the same thing because many people live in basements in Chicago. However the phone worked fine outside the house and on the 1st floor. I need to find someone with an LTE VZW phone to check my mom's basement again. I'm not sure about Sprint as well, but I think it has something to do with CDMA, as this is what people used to say... I may be wrong--never verified that. But I am not wrong about VZW being bad in basements for sure. Even my current roomate switched from VZW to ATT because she says she didn't have coverage in her basement.

I'm not an expert, but from what I understand signal penetration into basements and buildings has more to do with the frequency of the signal than the cell tower technology. The higher frequency signals (e.g. 1900 MHz) don't penetrate as well as lower frequency signals (e.g. 850 MHz). So it probably is dependent on what frequencies Verizon was using in the Chicago area at the time.

It also depends on the quality of the antennas in the phone. Two different phones sitting right next to each other on the same network can have different signal strengths. For example Motorola is known for their high quality antennas, whereas Samsung has had a few phones that had "signal issues". Even different phones from the same manufacturer can have varying quality cell antennas.

I'm sure there are other things that affect signal penatration. I just said all of this because I don't think CDMA vs GSM is one of those things.

I agree. Where I live Verizon uses 850mhz and it penetrates walls and basements much better than any other carrier. CDMA is also better for having conversations with low signal. It stays clearer when GSM breaks up. I've experienced it first hand but I also read it somewhere too. I prefer the performance of CDMA except for in data speeds but I just wish it wasn't so locked down. I fear we won't be getting the LG Nexus and I would really love to have one.

Verizon's version of GNex was released two month after the original release. Now there are rumors that VZW is not getting it at all. If I was 100% VZW will not get it, I wouldn't wait for another 3 months with uncertainty. I would just buy GSIII and root it....

Well my Nexus still works fine for me. The battery life just sucks so I was hoping the LG would have better battery life and I really like the specs. I also want software buttons and not physical buttons which is what is keeping me from getting the S3. I'm just going to wait and see for a little while.

I have been thinking about the disappointing aspects of the Nexus 4 and have a new hope... I hope that if these specs are real, that the rumor of multiple Nexus devices is true and that this is the low-end phone from the multi-phone lineup...

How else could you explain an 8gb model?

Its either the test device or the 8gb model. That doesn't mean there won't be a 16/32gb model

I'm now really not sure of LG's build quality. Ever since I saw a review of the LG Optimus G where the Glass back cracked the guy didn't even drop it. It just broke on its own when he was using it.

On the other hand, I've purposely beat the living crap out the the Optimus G I have here, and spoke at length last night with a Google employee who has an "Optimus G class device" who has also stress tested it. Not a scratch.
