So I sent an email to customer service for LG requesting that they release the source code for the LG Thrive, and this is the response I got this AM:

"Dear XXXXX,

Thank you for inquiring of LG Electronics.

We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I would be more than happy to assist you.
Unfortunately, LG will not be releasing the source code for the LG Thrive. Please contact Android for any further assistance.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions or concerns. Thank you again for contacting LG Electronics.

Now, I know that there are steps that I can take from here to escalate things, but I would appreciate guidance as to who I should be cc:'ing (i.e., compliance office for Android GPL, other??) when I escalate this internally within LG.

Also, does anyone have any form language that they have used to pry out of companies the source for GPL software?

Thanks for letting me know.

They will, they have to. I know exactly where the confusion is. That team you were talking to doesn't know what open source is or GPL compliance. As far as they are concerned, you just asked them for google source which is why they said "contact android"

LG has a specific open source team to deal with questions like this. You should send them a message using THIS PAGE making it clear the question is intended for the open source team and which model you are inquiring about.

EDIT - the link doesnt work properly so do the following: Click it, when the page reloads change the category to mobile phones and hit search. On the search page just click LGLS670 or any of the Optimus Series. Once you click you'll see a button that says "request for inquiry" .... use that.

DONE. Now, we will say what that team comes back with.

Will keep the forum posted.

Sorry for delay; I just got back from Yosemite camping.

Nothing new to report, as I have not yet heard back from anyone at LG.

Hope the camping trip was nice. Tell me your model # please. For example the optimus s is LGLS670

Still no response from LG

Just reporting to the thread that I have yet to receive a response from LG re my open source request for LG-P506 (Thrive).

Oh, and for those who are curious, the analogous model number for the Phoenix is LG-P505.

I actually got a reply back, that was a question to my question

Per the GPL agreement signed, please provide source code for LGP506
Their reply:
Thank you for your interest about our mobile phone.

We received your request on LG Open Source Code Distribution site.

This site is just for providing source codes of FOSS(Free and Open Source Software) we have used in our product.

Please let us know whether the model name is LGP506 or LGP506GO. (Try looking at the sticker on the back ? it?s usually underneath the battery. )

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

LGE MC Company Open Source Code Distribution Center
My reply:
As stated in my previous communication, the LGP506. Just looking for source code to fulfill the GPL agreement. Thanks in advance.

annnnnnnd no response lol

LGP506 or LGP506GO

Oops. I just did what they suggested (and popped off the back cover). The model number reported under the battery IS LGP506GO. So, you may want to update your response to them.

Weird that the model number reported under the Settings -> About Phone menu is different.

But, I am THRILLED that you got progress.

If you could perform the same request for the LGP505 (Phoenix), a phone I am expecting soon, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

No worries, I don't expect a response. They will release source, that's not an option. They are just taking their sweet time.

Oh yeah... opensource@lge.com .... their email address

Source code is available. I have confirmation from LG that the source for LGP506 and LGP506GO are the same.

Go to Open Source Main, Select mobile phone, Type LGP506GO as your criteria, hit search.

Dang; you beat me to reporting it. I just got the same confirmation a few minutes ago.

Also, on a related note (source code for LG Phoenix), I received the following from LG:

"2. We regret to advise you that we?re preparing to distribute the open source software used in LGP505 now.

We can assure you that we?ll let you know after we distribute the source code of LGP505 as soon as possible."

So, hopefully we will get news on that front soon.

Let the custom ROM building begin!!

It surely has been there for a while i believe. They just haven't uploaded it to their server. It seems since every time I click download, the message " File does not exist!" comes up.

The link for the download is now working (though the "Notice" link is still showing "File does not exist" error).

Happy ROM building (I am waiting for Phoenix source, since I have moved on to the Phoenix).

Can't open the download with either 7zip or winrar, something im doing wrong here? it's a zip file?
