LG V20 Custom contact notification sound does not play over default notification

Hello all!

So I just recently changed phones from a Galaxy S4 to a LG V20 and I gotta say that I'm loving it! One thing that I do not love however is one issue I've stumbled upon with text notifications from my contacts.

You see, I have a standard default sound for all notifications that come through. When I receive a text, this default sound plays. However, the notification sound I assign to my contacts are not playing when that contact texts me. Instead, the default sound plays. I have toyed with every setting I can possibly think of, but nothing seems to remedy this.

I had the same problem using Textra. I finally found that Textra had settings for notification sounds within the app. Finally got it working.

I'm using the default Messenger app. I did see the option to change the notification sounds for the app itself within its settings. I can also change it for individual conversation threads (which works), but it does not use the sound I assigned to the contact. Never had this issue before with any other phone. If I assigned a notification sound to a contact, when that person texts me, it plays that sound and not the default.

That is how it is working for me with Textra. It's a pretty good app. Give it a try!

I use the default messenger and I have successfully changed text tones for most of my contacts, and they work fine.... When I'm in a contacts messages, I touch the 3 buttons on top right, choose "people & options" then choose notifications and select a tone for that contact.

I found out that appears to be the only way get it set up the way I want. Although if that thread were to be deleted, it would revert back the default sound. With every other phone I've used, all I had to do was change the notification sound in my Contact options and it would go from that, but this method works well. Thanks for the replies all!

When you say default messenger, are you using the LG Messages app, or Google Messenger? When I set custom SMS tones for contacts it works if I use the LG sms app, but I have to use the method above to get them in Google Messenger. Unlike what you are experiencing though, if I delete a thread in Messenger, that contact SMS tone is still active the next time I receive a text from that contact.

I'm using the stock google messaging app, and I get no sound at all when a text comes in. I've tried using the stock notification sounds, Zedge, and another sound app. Nothing. Not a peep from this thing. I'm also having a problem with Chrome browser and the keyboard, but I guess that's another thread.

What carrier are you on? Do you get notification soundss from other apps (FB WhatsApp etc?) If you switched from the LG messaging to Google Messenger, some folks have had to go into app permissions and remove SMS permissions for the default LG app before they could get it to work.

I do not see that option when I click on the 3 dots on the top right.
My individual notifications for my contacts is not working either. My individual ringtones I set for my contacts work but not the notifications.
trying to fix it. I am using the stock sms.
Thank you for your help.

Ok just got this phone and went into EACH contact and changed the notification sound to the 1 i want. Went into sounds and displays and changed my notification and changed it to the same thing. Everytime i get a text i STILL get the crappy crystal sound. WTF

You have to be in the messaging app, then click those 3 dots and choose the "people" option, it will take you to that contacts page , choose edit and then change the messaging tone.
For whatever reason changing the tone does not work if you just go to your contact & change it. You have to go thru the msging app to do it. At least this is how it works for me using the default messaging app which is Google Messenger .

And if you delete the conversation (in the messaging app), it does not remember the custom tone - i.e. it doesn't save that setting with the actual contact. Dumb.

Having same issues. I am using the messenger that was already set on the phone. No matter how many times I set the notification (within the 3 dots) it always reverts back to that default sound when thread is deleted.HELP!!!!! Love the phone, but this may be the only reason I would return it if there is no solution.

The way I "work around" this (forgetting the custom sound when I delete a conversation) is to archive the conversation (swipe right) instead of deleting it.

I had the same problem when i first got the phone. Every other notifications was fine except for whatsapp. So i went to the settings in whatsapp and clicked the "notifications" and clicked the "3 dots" in the top right and clicked "reset notifications settings". And everything is fine now.
