Hi

I just got a hand-me-down LG VK700 tablet. It's running 5.0 Lollipop. Was wondering if there is anyway I can upgrade it manually to the latest or near-latest version of Android. If so, where can I find directions to do so?

Thanks in advance.

For such an old device, you'd have to see if anyone developed a custom ROM for that specific device (which would require rooting to install). The forums at XDA-developers.com are the best resource for that kind of thing.

Thanks buddy. Is it a bad idea to use it if I don't do a root? I mean it's a nice tablet and in good shape. I'd hate to just toss it.

There are probably a number of security flaws that haven't been patched in Lollipop, but if you're only using it for well-established apps, then it's probably fine. Keep in mind that as older API levels get deprecated, more and more apps will have problems working on it, though.

What I mean by that is well-established apps like Facebook or Twitter are much less likely to have malware lurking in them in the first place. But if you install more obscure apps from the Play Store (or from elsewhere), the chance of being adversely affected by adware or malware may be higher.

It's not a "bad idea" if you don't root, you can't install a custom ROM on the VK700 without rooting it first. (Some devices can be "re-ROMed" without rooting, some can't - the VK700 can't be.)
