Limit email retrieval?

I've just purchased the Samsung Galaxy S4 and have an email settings question.

Is there a setting to limit how far back emails will be added/sync? Right now I have the number of emails limited to 25 but I only wish for new emails to be received. Every Time I delete and email more get added from dates going back months. Hope this makes sense.

David which email program are you referring too, the built in email app or gmail?

I'm using the built in email app. Seems to get the job done but if I'm better off with something else I'm open to suggestions. I have several pop 3 email accounts as well as hotmail, etc. listed. Again, as soon as I delete one email an older one gets added to the bottom list when it syncs. Don't want that...if possible.
