List of Epic Pros and Cons

Let me say something positive first....I had the EVO for almost 30 days and the responsiveness and graphics capability are significantly better on the EPIC. This should improve even more with 2.2.

That being said there are definitely some quality issues. I am on my third EPIC.

The first EPIC had very loose slider. It also had very unresponsive capacitive buttons. There is definitely some variation between units on the capacitive buttons this isn't just varying preferences between users.

I picked up a second unit yesterday. Mechanically it was great. Rock solid. When I got home, I remembered that this device is actually supposed to be a phone. ;-) I placed a call and discovered I had defective speaker. It rattled and distorted at very low volumes.

I have my third unit. It has a solid slider at the extended position but there is some see-sawing when it is closed (rocking when pressing the screen at opposite ends). This is somewhat minor so it should be OK as long as it doesn't get worse. The downside of a real keyboard is that you can't guarantee that it will be rock solid over time.

GPS:
Across all three units the GPS is a little bit sluggish especially compared to the EVO. I also noticed that on all units the system would never report accuracy better than 30m. This appears to be a bug because using google maps it appeared to be able to eventually resolve my position on the map within 10 feet or so.

S/W:
There are some Wifi bugs and 4G can be flakey when it is going in and out. These items should easily get worked out along with GPS in an update...I hope.

I have no issues with wifi. Just joined the network mid-call and downloaded and installed an app no problem. :/

When I use an aux cable to listen to music thru my car stereo, it renders my bluetooth useless. Epic shows as connected to Bluetooth, but i can only hear the caller thru my stereo and the caller cannot hear me at all.

Any thoughts on what to do?

EDIT: This was never a problem on Pre or Evo using the same bluetooth headset.

GPS is in the lowest tier of performance. (Can anyone name one that's actually worse?)

Can't leave the phone on the beside table due to "Charging complete" notification in the middle of the night.

Screen is pixelated; everything looks dithered. Screen burns power like there's a hole in the battery.

Video chat with Qik is really poor due to stretched images and limitation of one speaker at a time.

Yah, my BT on Pre was fine until now. Try restart your Epic. It helps.

My problem now is the skipping of music. It is terrible: having email running at 5 min pull, ameritrade running and music playing (while driving).

Qik is almost unusuable due to bad image quality and voice audible. lots of tiling, lost of audio. I still can't call one of my friend on Qik or Fring.

Volume sticks with case

Bought the only snap on cover they had at "the shack" when I got the phone. If the slider is shut to normal position, when you use the "down" volume control, it sticks 100% of the time and shuts either the talk or the app volume off. Take the top cover off the slider, and it is fixed. Nothing is touching the slider at all, tried several of these. Very weird, nothing is near the up/down button at all, but it must just put enough pressure on it. So...if your buying a case...test it at the store b/c I am sure they will say it is the cases problem, even though it seams to fit perfectly.

a few things

I think my slider is a bit loose and can feel it moving a bit when handling the phone and sometimes I get stuck on the Task Manager screen and am unable to get back to the home page. I have crashed TouchWiz once already, and have only had the phone for 24 hours.

GPS issue has been itentified and they say a fix is on the way.

+1 on Qix, completely worthless

Personally, I think you can add slow charging time to the list. My Pre could go from drained to fully charged in an hour and half, Epic is taking longer than 3 hours

it bc of the pre's charger (the walla and usb) if you still hav it use it, it will charge faster

Here are my observations. I have two EPICs.

Cap buttons turn off too early, even when I've set them to match screen timeout. They're not very responsive, either.
The charging time is extremely long, and the battery dies after about half a day. Burns out quickly even when not in use.
The screen orientation sensor isn't reliable.
GPS really blows.
Frequent 4G signal loss in perfect reception situations.

Yep I just noticed this as well. The line input jack overrides the bluetooth- most other phones- the BT overrides the line in. If anyone figures out a workaround- I'd be interested- yanking out the line in when listening to music to receive a call just sucks- and isn't safe either.

qik is ugly....yes, but maybe v2.2 will fix this is?

no issues, except one time in the last three days, i plugged in the supplied headset and not only did i hear the music through the headset but also through the back speaker! odd.... anyway, turning the phone off/on, fixed this... not a hardware issue....

besides that, prob the best smartphone i've ever owned.... give it an A-

Power Button

Has anyone had any trouble getting the screen to turn off via the power button? I noticed this recently. I can't turn off my screen until it turns off itself (depending on how long the option is set at).

You Tube App Time Sort

I mentioned this on a different thread but I wanted to post it in the appropriate spot. Has anyone else noticed that the time sort on the You Tube app is broken?
