I had an old, cheap Galaxy Light forever. I could be listening to audio through the earbuds while getting into my car and it would connect to the car's bluetooth. When that happened the audio would blip out for about a second or two, but then it would resume. If someone called while I was in driving, the call would come through and go to the car's audio system through bluetooth, and the audio would stop coming from the earbuds. I didn't have anything set specially. It just happened.

Now that I have a Galaxy S8, when I get into the car while listening through the audio jack, the bluetooth connects and no audio will come through the earbuds after that.

Is there some sort of setting I need to change? Or is this just something I have to get used to?

Yes. Bluetooth be default is set for calls and media. Since Bluetooth is set for media, music won't come out of earbuds. Go under Bluetooth, and find your car listed in there. Tap the gear icon on the right side of the listed device. You will see sliders for call and media. Tap and disable it for media but leave calls. Now when connected it should work for phone calls, but media should still play over phone speaker or earpiece.

Really? That's odd. On my old POS phone, I didn't have to do anything.

If the earbuds were connected to the audio jack, audio would come out of the earbuds and not the car's bluetooth. If the earbuds weren't plugged in, audio would go through bluetooth and not the earbuds.

Are you saying that the fancy new phone can't figure out where to send the audio signal based on what's plugged in?

That's terrible.

So some people would think that is the way it should be. like if I have my phone hooked up to my headphones while I am at the gym.... don't disconnect the headphones when I get in my car I would expect the phone to start playing on the bluetooth. They picked that behavior instead of keeping the headphones playing music.

Well, it's easy to change. Never had your phone but the Bluetooth behavior on this phone is the same way my LG V10 worked. And my G4, and my Note 4, and my HTC One m7. I thought EVERY phone defaulted like that.
