Loaded my first ROM

So I bit the bullet and finally loaded my first ROM. I decided to go with BAMF Forever Cubed 1.0.8 (still need to load the 1.0.9 patch), and am in the process of tweaking it now.

The questions I have are - I went from stock pre-GB (froyo?) to BAMF which I believe is GB. I used Rom Manager to autmatically download it to my phone and install it making sure I checked both options to wipe data and Delvik (or whatever it was called). I hadn't done anything with the radios yet because figured that would be step 2 - but when the new ROM came up, my phone worked for making and receiving calls, and data usage.

Is an update to the radio's necessary for this ROM? or can I leave it as is?

Also, when I use Rom Manager to flash the 1.0.9 patch, do I need to wipe both of those data cache's again?

Thanks everyone!

Some of the older Froyo Radio's worked on both the Froyo ROMs and the newer GB ROMs.... do you need to update - No... BUT you still have an old Radio. If you are happy, stick with it, but you are not going to know if there is something better unless you load a newer Radio.

Updating with a patch... usually you don't have to wipe data or even cache, but you should check the programmer's notes on the patch to be sure.

ok, one more question.

When flashing the radio's - there are two files. One for CDMA and one for LTE, but the instructions only reference one file/procedure. I'm assuming I have to do the process twice? Once using the CDMA radio file and then again using the LTE radio file?

You are correct... the old days (a few months ago) they were packaging the radio files together... now they are leaving the as two separate files so you can load whatever radio's you want... an LTE from one and a different version for your CDMA radio if you want... personally I always like to keep them from the same version (they have different numbers, but from the same ROM version release like 2.11.605.3 RUU).

Just be sure to either delete the PG05IMG.zip file (the radio file name), or rename the file after you flash it each time... otherwise it can cause issues later if you have to go into the hboot screen again... and believe me someday you will need to go into the hboot screen again and you don't want these files on your SD card (at least with that name).

I am be a total blonde here so forgive me....but I am not aware of there being separate radios for CDMA and LTE. I am running Mr3 and I have LTE/CDMA/EvDo all wrapped into one.

Look at the "Latest Radio's" link in my signature below.

Check Menu | Settings | About Phone | Software | More. Under Baseband, the leftmost number is your CDMA radio and the rightmost is the LTE radio.

These are the official VZW OTA GB radios.

It depends on where you download from. Adrynalyne still usually wraps everything into a single package when he posts radios on the BAMF site, for example, but the XDA link you have in your sig has them separated.

Either way works...may be easier to use the package deal if you don't have a specific reason to install across different versions.

I am planning on rooting in the next few days (when I have a some quite moments), I have been watching nate's videos on youtube. His first option to flash is with rom manager, but you are saying that is not a good way to flash roms? Also, I thought there are radios already in the roms when they are flashed? What is the advantage to changing radio's (no 4G for me yet)? Thanks, trying to gather info before i dive in.

THE BEST way to flash a ROM is to follow the STICKY thread: http://forums.androidcentral.com/thunderbolt-rooting-roms-hacks/77350-guide-how-backup-restore-install-roms-thunderbolt.html

ROM's do NOT contain radio files. The confusion might lie in that an OTA will flash a new ROM and update the Radio files... but it's not part of these custom ROMs.

Advantage of changing radio... you will get the latest changes to the radio... and if you flash the latest we know of right now you will be flashing the one that part of the Official Thunderbolt on the Gingerbread ROM... which is from the 2.11.605.5 RUU.

So, if I do not flash new radios after the new rom, I will simply keep the officail VZ radios already installed?
