Location based wifi setting

I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, but I'd like to make sure this is working properly.
Does the wifi setting have to be on or off for it to automatically turn on?
Also, when I leave the wifi area it's supposed to turn off but I notice it shows the wifi icon with the question mark, telling me it's still searching for wifi.
Good idea in theory, trying to prove it works right.

Try deleting all the saved wireless locations, then just start at home with your wireless network. You should be leaving wifi turned on however. I find it a great feature, not only does it save battery, but also stops it from attempting to connect to poor open networks.
