Lock screen widgets with security PIN enabled?

and then you can turn back on your pin our pattern or whichever you'd like.

Tried this and it reverts to the standard Samsung clock.

I'm upset by this. The reason I switched frim iOS to Android was so I would have control over the phone and it's functions. Although, I can do a lot more, this lock-screen business and and things like the headphone volume warning are quite dissapointing. I want to have my cake and eat it too.

Why are you upset by it? It should be common sense that widgets that give direct access to not only the handset, but also the information it contains, are disabled when security is enabled on a device.

It's like what was previously stated in the "locked door, open curtain" analogy. I like the access to my camera, music, keep, etc. But I don't see why they HAVE to go directly to the homescreen if you exit them, rather than to a pascode screen.

Because that's what widgets are. They're not there to operate independently.

This same 'feature' is causing a different issue for me. I use "SMS Popup" to display incoming text messages on my locked screen and on the S4 the app is no longer able to do that. On my previous Moto Droids, even if you lock by pin or pattern, it was able to display a pop-up box with the text and a close button. On my new VZW S4, all I get is "Messaging" so I have to log in to see what I received. I get 50-100 texts per day for work-related things so this is making the S4 pretty annoying so far, but I don't want to run it without security.

Anyone know if there's a setting hidden within the S4 (or a different app) to let texts be displayed on the lock screen rather than just 'messaging'?

I agree. I came from an LG-Nitro that did this. I text alot so I am forced to leave my phone unlocked just to be able to read my texts quickly and without having to unlock every time. This is one of the things I don't like on the S4.

On my last phone's lock screen, I could swipe up on the app shortcut (such as messaging or camera) and be prompted for the pin code. How is that any less secure?

I may try a custom launcher. I was using Nova launcher before and may try that on the S4.

I tried 'Go Locker' and am able to have a pin and still have shortcuts. After swiping down on the shortcut, I'm prompted for pin, then the application shortcut is launched as expected. I'm still using the default TouchWiz launcher for now - the current version of Go Locker supposedly works with all launchers (and appears to so far for me).

Messaging > Settings and there is an option for preview message. Hope that helps!

Personally, I'm looking for a little granularity in my security and I don't see why it can't be offered. For example, I don't want anyone having access to my email but could care less if someone activated the camera and took a bunch of pictures.

IOS allows you to do just (and only) that. In fact you don't even have access to the "camera role"; just the camera and the photos you've taken in the current camera session. It's pretty handy for that spontaneous shot.

Seriously, I've used iOS as well as Android. I'm not prejudice/biased to either. All I know is what I would like. I know iOS is currently able to have shortcuts on the lockscreen without compromising security. I'm no Android developer(nor iOS dev) but this seems like it would be an opportunity to develop a much needed app rather than try to argue about how un-useful it would be since so many people are requesting/have used this type of feature.. And like it..

Guys, widgets on the lockscreen BYPASS security, period. If you choose to have a secure lockscreen (either by choice or because your Mail/Work/VPN demands it), widgets are out. Period. This is not something they 'broke', it's something they're fixing.

It's like locking your house but leaving a huge window open by the door.
You put a lot of periods but it doesn't make you right.
When using lock screen widgets on native Android 4.2 it is possible to use pin/code and it still protected - you still can't unlock your device without the pin and you still can't get any information from the device that the widget are not showing you. it is possible - but Samsung are too lazy for dealing with it - so they removed this option. this is why I'm glad that Google came with their own version of Samsung S4 that has a native Android 4.2.

This is quite annoying, I obviously want a pin / some security, but I also want the option of accessing the camera (at least) from the screen.

Both iOS and Windows Phone give you the option of using the camera without unlocking the device without compromising any security.

It may be great security, but it's annoying for those of us who want a bit of convenience as well as a secure device.

You have to enable the swipe method and add or customize the shortcuts there. And once you're done go back to enabling the pin or patter method and the shortcuts will stay on the lock screen even though its not an option under those methods. The only thing you can't do is add extra pages for widgets.

Tried this and it does not work. Once you select any form of lock screen security the shortcuts are removed and any widget you select is replaced by the standard Samsung one.

After reading through this thread, I asked an IT professional I am aquainted with, and it was his assertion that this was something that Samsung implimented to assure certification by the gov/military and to a lesser degree business. Now this was just speculation on his part, but he said the government tends to go way over board on this type of thing, it does seem to make sense to me...As overboard as Samsung tends to be on features, it doesn't seem likely they would eliminate a convenience like this without reason!

Cheers

The swipe-mode, enable, pin mode didn't work for me either.

I don't believe that's the case. The phone would have to be running a hacked version of Android OS that intentionally removes the API calls that are used to display things to the lock screen. Those functions are obviously still there since the Handcent app (that I just switched to from SMS Popup) can successfully display SMS alerts to the locked screen on my S4, or even let you reply without authenticating, if you enable that option.

I've also heard that most government/military facilities that allow staff or civilians to bring personal phones in, also require the phones have no camera, so it's not uncommon to find editions of the some phones that have the camera removed, or third parties that will remove it. I'm sure there are a laundry list of other changes required to make a phone qualified for duty personnel use and they'd be extensive enough that they would just maintain that branch of code separately rather than disable parts of consumer devices to make it 'easier'.
