Lost Root and Everyone is Confusing Me

Sorry dmmarck, I probably have that folder, but you're talking to an extreme novice. I re-unlocked, and now when I get into recovery mode I get E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command

and a bunch of other can't mount errors.

What did you do, exactly? Here's what you need to get to, so keep this in the back of your mind regardless of what method you're following:

(1) You need a custom recovery to root; so you need to replace stock recovery with CWM or TWRP recovery. This means that without a custom recovery, you can't do any proper flashing. With it, you can, and then you can flash root.

(2) You need that SU file that you already had. Once you have a custom recovery, you flash the SU and get root access.

What guide did you use? The one 7stringer discussed? Our Mac guide?

Step 9. Reboot your Galaxy Nexus and connect to your computer. Copy the file “CWM-SuperSU-v0.87.zip” to the internal storage of your Galaxy Nexus.

My Android File Transfer won't recognize my GNex. How do I copy now?

I used the one 7stringer gave. I didn't know and was too burnt out/lazy to check if there was a guide here after the hours of looking on forums. How do I flash my new su.zip file?

Sorry Mastaking...I already locked and unlocked a few minutes before your post.

Go into settings and make sure USB Debugging is NOT checked in developer options.

Oh okay. I'm stupid. My GNex was in fastboot mode, no wonder why it wouldn't recognize.

lol it happens, don't worry. Slide it over, reboot into CWM recovery, install from zip, and boom, root.

Ugh, Now I get red triangle dude when I go into recovery mode. It was so clean and easy the first time...

Did you follow his method to get CWM on the phone? That's the recovery error.

NVM FIXED.

Okay now the su404.zip file won't install, it aborts it. Do I need a 4.0.4 ROM first? So I have to use RootKeeper and then Upgrade and then Update to su404?

You do have the OTA installed, right? You're on 4.0.4?

I presume from that last sentence, no. If you just unlocked/relocked, and are on 4.0.2, you need to follow my guide to install the OTA manually. This will get you to 4.0.4. Then, you use THAT zip and root it.

Right, I locked and relocked so I'm back to 4.0.2. But I don't want to use the OTA update. Can you recommend a good ROM/kernel combo? I keep reading AOKP/franco is good and better than the stock 4.0.4. Where would I find the latest versions of this with instructions to DL?

AOKP B38 and franco Kernel R180. That's the best you'll find at the moment :).

Here's what you do. Once you have CWM recovery, download the ROM and its GAPPS file. GAPPS = google applications, which can't be "included" in the rom for legal reasons. Placed both on your SDcard. Reboot into recovery, wipe DATA, wipe CACHE, wipe DALVIK CACHE, then FORMAT SYSTEM. Install from SD card the AOKP rom file and then install from SD card the GAPPS file. THEN reboot system.

Thanks a lot dmmarck and others. Pleasure doing business with you guys. Definitely learned a lot. Rooting ain't so scary after all.

No problemo. Rooting takes your phone and gives it superpowers, or so me thinks :).

@ Dmmarck - Hey man - do you know why my Recovery Mode would only work intermittently? For example, I ran a ROM backup this morning with no issues using my ROM manager (yes, I have CWM in and SU access already).

But, I'm trying to go in and wipe data and install a new ROM, but it won't even go into Recovery. It gets the little Red Triangle thing that everyone seems to see every so often.

It just doesn't make sense that it would work fine to install SU acces, and work fine to run a ROM Backup, but now it's pooping out on me.

B/c CWM didn't stick. There's an issue with a file and the ".p" and ".bak" discrepancy. It was discussed a bit here and elsewhere (i'll provide a link), but essentially what happens is CWM won't stick b/c of this file. You either rename the file or delete it to get it to stick "permanently" (which is only as permanent as you decide, b/c you can flash a new one).

Here's an AC post on it ==> http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...recovery-wont-stick-reverts-old-recovery.html
And here's a RW post on it ==> CWM not sticking - Galaxy Nexus - RootzWiki

Thanks, man. I wouldn't have know how to search for this.

No problem. It was an issue earlier on. Weirldly, I never had the issue myself--perhaps the superboot stuff I used had already taken care of it (I presumed Wug's did as well).

Just flash CWM again and use Root Explorer to dig around for that file. Rename it and you should have CWM "permanently" until you decide that TWRP is a better option ;) (I keed I keed).

I'm stupid. I forgot I bought Flash Touch...which, once I hit that and used the install ROM command from ROM Manager, it seems to be working just fine. Duh.
