Loud static noise when recording video?

Hi All,

I've come across something and I'm not sure if this is normal or not.

When I record what is essentially silence in a completely silent room, I hear this loud static sort of noise when I play back the recording. I've recorded what I mean and uploaded it to Google Photos:

You can hear this pretty loud static type of noise. Is this normal? Does anyone else have that noise when they video record in a completely silent setting? Mind recording video in a silent room then playing it back and telling me what you hear?

are you on 8.1 yet? As far as I remember it was a known issue by Google and supposed to be fixed on 8.1

Yeah you're right. Looks like it was flagged for spam - it was just a black screen with the static noise. I've changed the link to the Google Photos one. Check that video.

WEll I watched your video and then went and made my own video and mine has the same effect. Quite annoying. Like I said before I coulda sworn this was a known issue to be fixed in 8.1 but I can't remember 100%. In any case, we are both on 8.1 and we both have the issue.

Can others try this little test?

Yep I have it too. I first noticed it on my Nexus 5X after the 8.1 update, now same thing on my pixel 2 xl

Yes, happens to me. In absolute silence, lasts for 6-8 seconds then fades. Slightest noise and it returns. Posted about the same subject on here 10 days ago or so, along with a link to video. Check it out (if it hasn't been removed) to see if it's the same.

Try the open camera solution I posted and see if that helps

I only hear it if I run the volume higher than 3/4 max on playback on the phone

Same here. I may just have to live with it. My phone has blue shift and this static issue but otherwise it runs smooth as hell with great battery life.

Blue tint I could live with. The static on videos I can't look pass. So I'm returning the 2 xl.

Well I still have my nexus 5x which is running perfectly fine. But I've given up on the 2 xl, hopefully google will do a better job with the pixel 3.

When you record video using the AR stickers there is zero static during silence. Leads me to believe there is a software fix for the video problem.

I'm on 8.1 and I also noticed the static too. I recorded video on my Panda in a quiet room. If I play the video back and turn the volume up, I hear static. I tested my LG V20 and also an iPhone 6 out to compare. Both also have static when I replay the video and turn up the volume. But the static seems a little worse on the Panda. I'm guessing this is normal, but hopefully there will be a fix in a future update.

I tested this on my partner's phone (Galaxy S7 Edge) and it also has the static noise.

Might be an Android thing?
