Love the phone! Some initial thoughts

I have the Galaxy S6 Edge 32GB, and I got the Graphite 6P 32GB today.

Same apps (I chose) installed, but the 6P only uses 4GB of space compared to the S6 using 13GB. The amount of preinstalled apps and bloatware is staggering.

The average ram usage is half of the S6 Edge. (1.2/3 vs 2.4/3

I really didn't know how poor Samsung phones were from an optimization standpoint until seeing those numbers.

I agree with much of what you said, however the build on the MXPE is said to be very good. It may not be a full metal build, but I can't think of a Motorola model with bad build properties.

In any event, I decided to make concessions and take what was available. I picked up a 64GB Aluminium 6p when it popped up as available. Perhaps if they come out with a graphite 128 in the mean time I'll cancel this and go with that, otherwise I'll just deal with it.

Actually, yes I agree the build of the MXPE is good; my brother has one in fact and it feels great. My wording was poor and I intended to mean that there are questions about its updates, the camera, and other features of the phone itself.

Glad you decided to go with the 6P. It'll be worth it.

I'm wondering when they are going to be back in Stock? And why you just can't place a order. I'm on the wait list. Congrats on getting one, enjoy ☺

Will I need to go into T-Mobile to get a new SIM or will the phone ship with a SIM?

The weird thing is I ordered a 5x and 6p. I called to cancel the 5x but continue on with the wait on the 6p. They said they couldn't do that and to just refuse order of 5x (but it will probably be in one box) or return at my expense. Cancelling one item was not able to be done.

Really?

Mine was delivered today and wow it feels dramatically lighter and smaller than the Motorola Nexus 6. Speakers are super loud and crisp. Screen looks amazing. I really like the finger print scanner and where they placed it. I use T-Mobile and it's funny my Motorola Nexus 6 always connected to Band 12 but in my experience at work Band 12 is pretty slow. The 6p isn't connecting to band 12 but instead band 4 (which before the Nexus 6 had band 12 activated band 4 was horrible at my work cutting in and out) but Band 4 is so much faster than Band 12.... Yesterday I was even checking and I was on band 12 with the Motorola Nexus 6... and it was slow.. Maybe 2 Mbps download.. 6p on band 12 I am getting 8 - 10 Mbps....

I do already miss wireless charging though. I like the USB Type C but still while on my desk charging it's a pain to pick the phone up and maneuver it around so that I can hit the finger print sensor and use the phone. Almost easier to unplug it and plug it back up vs trying to get around the cord..... Which I thought was the point of wireless charging (I know it was slower but at work I just kept it on and off the wireless charger plus I was using the TYLT charger that tilted the phone to where I could see it without having to prop it up or pick it up to see the screen)

Outside of that super fast, super thin, super light... I like it.... it would be dang near perfect with wireless charging....

I really enjoy the phone's design.

My favorite so far, power button. I LOVE THIS BUTTON! Also a fan of the fingerprint sensor placement, but I am coming from a LG G2.

Software is software, and it can always be fixed. But physical attributes you are stuck with. So what I don't like, the screen. In very very direct sunlight, you get this weird HAZE that appears. I'm not sure what it is. It almost as if the gorilla glass is slightly too far from the screen itself, and almost casts a shadow. I don't like it at all.

I also have a Tylt wireless charger; I'm glad I only bought one last year as I had almost bought two. True, you do lose the convenience, but the longer battery life and with fast charging I think more than compensates for it.

I bought my TYTL's back with the Nexus 5... I bought one and liked it and got two more when they did a 1/2 off sale right after I got my Nexus 6. I kept one at work one in my kitchen and one on my night stand.

Was never an issue with my Nexus 6.. I easily made it through a day with no problem.. I got my 6p at 11 this morning and it was at 48% batter life and it's almost 4 now and I still have 44% now... Be interesting to see how well it last... I saw a considerable amount of battery life improvement in the week or so I had 6.0 on the Motorola Nexus 6... and since the 6p has a slightly bigger battery and slightly smaller screen it should be much better.....

I ordered mine yesterday morning and it arrived today. Fantastic format and very easy to hold. Fast and smooth. Very pleased. Back goes my Moto X Style tomorrow. This is a much better device.

I had pretty subpar battery life with the Nexus 6. It wasn't terrible, but not the greatest either. So far the battery in the 6P has been going pretty strong, despite frequent and heavy use, more than I typically use. I don't have exact numbers yet, but I'm pretty content with what I have so far.

How slippery is the phone to hold? Is it very likely to fall out of one's hands because of the aluminium body or do the sides have some grip? Most reviews / posts I think do not mention much of this. The photos of the 6P however do show the metal edges but give no indication of how slippery or otherwise the phone is. If it is slippery, I might have to order one of the cases.

Got the phone today, the 32 GB Graphite variant and so far I love it! Some initial thoughts:

  • I came from the Nexus 6. The 6P feels great in the hand compared to the unwieldy, thick Nexus 6. It's thinner, lighter, and just feels right.
  • The build of the phone is solid; feels like quality material. Overall, it reminds me a lot of the original Droid X, which I like.
  • It looks great and as many reviews have said, the camera hump actually looks fine in person.
  • First thing I did after initial setup was go for a run with bluetooth earbuds. No problems there.
  • No heat issues when watching videos or playing games.
  • Speedy, quick to load, smooth. I've had no hiccups, stuttering, or bugs noticed yet.
  • While the C-to-C cable is long enough, the included Type C to Type A cable is incredibly short. You'll definitely need to get longer cables (and higher capacity chargers).

It's too early to say anything about the battery, but I'm pretty sure it won't be a problem. Looking forward to more regular daily use.

I didn't find it to be very slippery to hold. I have a case on it now...

The metal is pretty grippy in my opinion. I've never had any doubts about it slipping out of my hands. It's narrow enough for me that I can mostly use it one-handed unless there's something I need at the very top of the display.

The 6p is great, but the MXPE has some advantages as well. The way I looked at it is this,
N6p pros - fast updates, metal build, fingerprint scanner
N6p cons - no expandable storage, higher price for top model, currently unavailable

MXPE pros - SD card, quality build, Moto apps, cheaper with more storage capability
MXPE cons - updates are unknown at this time, no fingerprint scanner, reports of build issues and issue with Motorola customer service

So they both have their good and bad points. My last 3 phones have been Motorola, and I like their implementation of apps like Moto Display and Assist over Google's version, but I feel it's time for a change, not only because of the issues with Moto and Lenovo, but also that I've always wanted to try a Nexus phone. I'm still running my '13 Nexus 7 and like it over anything I've seen released since, but it'd be nice to have both phone and tablet be on the quick list for updates.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head for my considerations. I have a 2013 Moto X and placed an order last night for a 32 GB Aluminum 6P. It should be in my hands by the end of next week according to my order status.

Moto's recent update experiences as well as the lack of fingerprint scanner, plus the only $50 premium for the 6P when comparing the same size (32 GB) made it an easy decision for me.

Ok serious? To the people who have a case on the phone and claim its not slippery... Go rethink your response. Seriously...

I'll go ahead and disagree with everyone that says the phone is not slippery. I came from a LG G2, and I had a case on it. But in the last few weeks, I took the case of and used it naked. Trying to train myself to be extra careful in preparation for the 6P. I had the G2 for a few years, only dropped it a few times. With the case of, the phone felt slightly slippery. But it was smaller, my hands are pretty big, and I could pretty much man handle it. IE Easily flip it to from vert to horiz with just one hand. It is harder to pull this move off with the 6P.

With the 6P. I find myself picking it up carefully. The phone is larger than the LG G2, and even with my large hands I have trouble using the phone one handed. IE: I can reach the other side of the phone to tap a key, but my thumb pad hits the far side and registers a touch on the screen. A true testament to the size of this phone.

Now if I compare the texture of the G2 to the 6P, I would say the 6P is smoother. Which, makes its harder to handle. I have slightly clammy hands which I think actually help improve my grip. I would imagine that if your hand were very dry, the phone would be even slicker. It might be mental because the phone is new, and I plan on using it naked but I definitely think this phone is slippery. You gotta be careful. The size and texture make it difficult to use one handed, especially when its new and you are being gentle.

With that said, I've got the nexus protect plan.

I don't find the phone slippery at all even without a case. I played around with it for 1/2 a day without a case with no issues at all. But at the same time coming from the Motorola Nexus 6 the 6p feels dramatically lighter and thinner.. I had no major issue using the Nexus 6 one handed and now two days into the 6p it's a breeze to use one handed. It's only I think 6 grams lighter but I think the combination of having a reduced width and thinner build it makes it feel a lot smaller than it really is.......

It's all subjective I guess. People are going to have different experiences... I just pulled mine out the case and played around with it and I stand by my "It's not slippery at all" remarks...

It is much less slippery than a hagfish, but for a phone, I would not say it is grippy in any way shape or form. Not saying this has been a problem for me, but if you're expecting it to be grippy, you'll be disappointed. My LG G3 would happily sit on an open palm at 45 degrees and go nowhere. This phone is not going to do that, unless you've got really sticky hands.

Gripping the phone sides is fine, but the back itself is pretty slippery. In certain positions if you're just holding the back and front, it can be slippery. However, I agree with Robbie that coming from the Nexus 6, the 6P just feels better to hold in hand, especially one-handed.
