I came across what I thought was an interesting scene last night and quickly tried to take some pics. I took a pic in auto/HDR and then another in HQ mode on my OP3. Then I got the bright idea to pull out my iPad Pro 9.7 and take a pic in HDR mode. See what you think.

No modifications to any images. Mouse over the thumbnail images to see which is HDR and which is HQ. I don't know why the iPad Pro file loaded up sideways in the attached thumbnails... which are supposed to be full size. Also, I'm curious why the HQ file size is so much larger than the HDR file on the OP3. ??

I'll load 1024x768 images below. Thoughts?

OP3 HDR/auto mode. (2.48MB)

The iPad's colors look more muted, though given Apple's processing behavior, this is normal as the camera tends to favor less saturation in order to create what's usually a more accurate image.

Both the 3T's modes (Auto + HQ) look kinda similar, but the HQ image does appear to have slightly less digital noise.

I agree on the HQ observation. Which mode do y'all usually use?

I don't use a 3T, but I usually keep it on Auto but with HDR off.

Mainly because I'm not a big fan of how many Androids like to use HDR to create a brighter overall image by brightening the shadows but sometimes blows out the highlights. I usually have a better time shooting a RAW image and then tweaking it myself (which the 3T can also do).

The exception would be HDR on the iPhone and HDR+ on the Nexus/Pixel, though I'll still keep it off for most shooting scenarios on the iPhone and keeping it in HDR+ Auto on the Pixel.
