LTE vs 3g for battery life

Has anyone tried setting the network to 3g only to see if that improves their battery life by a significant amount? I've got LTE all day and I can actually feel the phone a bit warm, which I presume is from LTE (nothing else running in the background). I'm guessing this whole LTE signal searching is making the phone heat up and draining my battery at the same time. Thoughts?

Well, I haven't tested it on the moto x yet... But I know that on my droid RAZR and gnex, 3g was much better on battery life than 4g.

Anytime a phone is searching for a strong signal it is going to affect the battery life. I have LTE in my area and great coverage and it doesn't drain my battery that much. My phone also never gets unusually warm. On the other hand, my nexus 4 I had that of course didn't have LTE, seemed to drain a bit faster and always seemed to fight to find some sort of 3g/hspa+ signal. Really annoying.

When I travel I disable LTE, when the phone searches for towers it gulps the battery while in LTE mode.
