I have been using the M8 for several weeks after using the Lumia Icon for a couple of months. I like the camera of the M8 more than the Icon. It has a better interface and takes better low light pictures. The biggest plus of the camera of the M8 is its speed. The Icon was slow when it came to taking pictures. Daylight pictures take a little work but I have several custom presets for different situations.

I think it sucks that they are abandoning the ultrapixel technology and doing a me too design with the new M8 eye duo camera.

People don't want work when it comes to cell phone cameras. Set to auto. Point click. Great result. Not. Tinker. Point. Touch focus. Click and hope for a great result. Apple has this figured out. I'll give them credit for that.

You're both right, it all depends what you prefer.

I am generally happy with the point and shoot photos from my phone, but when I know I'm taking a photo that needs some input, I do that

Or I just use a real camera

My M8 posted this

I've had my M8 for about a week and a half ( coming from an iPhone 4s) and I've come to this conclusion as well.

It definitely has it's shortcomings, only 4MP and HDR can be easily over exposed, but I've been able to take some damn good shots with this phone. neo has it right in that Apple has figured out what people really want, a great point-and-shoot. I was very close to returning this phone and getting the LG G3 but I just couldn't give up the iPhone like fluidness and the rock solid feel. Now that I'm used to how the phone operates I can get a quick shot of my toddler doing something silly without worrying about missing the shot alltogether. I can easily fire off 3 in the time my iPhone would take one.

Honestly, if they get rid of the Ultrapixel tech, I won't be sad, as long as they keep the quality up. However if they decide to keep it, I just hope the bump the res to at least 8MP. I'd like to print a pic or two here and there.

Either way, the M8 is a great phone that continues to impress me, 4MP and all

As long as you don't have to zoom or crop, you can easily make quality prints up to 8x10....

Anyone know of any settings changes that can improve M8 photos/videos?

I've seen some decent tips on phoneArena.com, but not much else that goes beyond the same generic list of features mentioned in the owner's manual or in reviews that bag on the camera.

I disagree.. My wife is upgrading and I won't recomend the M8. she will get the S5. she wants a great camera so that's it. I will be looking forward to the (18)camera on the MAX 2 and hope for a 15+ on the M9. the camera on the M8 is fine untill you upload to computer. i love HTC but the camera stinks-

It's only shortcomings are zooming that I've found but lets be honest we knew that was the case when purchasing it. I'm completely satisfied with mine.

All I have to say is... I am completely Confused as to all the complaints on the m8 camera... The camera takes absolutely incredible pictures... I think it's all in people's heads...

People see 4 mega-pixel and think low quality low resolution...

What most people don't understand is two factors with the m8 camera... One is the dual focus for depth...

The other is... Its 4 ultra-pixels and that is not a marketing term... It is a real thing... Ultra pixel technology allows for twice as much light to pass through the lens... More light passing through means more detail in the shot... The 4 ultra-pixel technology provides a smoother capture... Combined with the dual camera to add depth... You have yourself an incredible picture...

Mega pixels being smaller technically offer a sharper image... But in the real world, the mega pixel cannot produce an image the way an ultra-pixel can as the lack of light passing through negates the ability for sharpness... Not to mention... The mega-pixel can only capture a small range at peak quality...

It takes a geek like me to understand these things... The truth is... OEMs should say "up to 8 mega-pixel quality instead of bluntly stating 8 mega-pixel camera...

I have owned many smart phones and the HTC one M8 Camera trumps them all... I was amazed at the incredible shots... And the range of the shots... I was able to capture shots where I was taking a photo of my daughter and noticed everything around her was in perfect detail... And my daughter seemed to stand out at the same time... Instead of the surrounding elements being blurred to highlight the main focus... The depth of the dual capture allowed full detail of all elements without causing a blend effect...

The HTC one M8 is by far the most underrated camera of all time... Point and shoot is whatever... For me... I would rather hold steady and take a brilliant photo...

I see all these complaints about the m8 camera... And frankly... People don't know what they are complaining about...

The pictures don't lie...

The m8 takes absolutely jaw dropping shots... Just gorgeous results...

Plain and simple... The larger ultra-pixel intakes more light which in turn more detail shows up in the shot...

I read an article recently about how the number of mega-pixel on a camera doesn't mean better shots...

General knowledge lacking people think it's all about the mega-pixel count... They are incorrect... There is a lot of factors that goes into a great camera... HTC had it nailed on the head with this one... Unfortunately... The general public has been trained to just count the mega-pixel...

I would take ultra-pixel technology over mega-pixel count any day... After seeing the shots I get with my HTC one m8... I just scratch my head as to what the hell people are talking about...

Anyone who truly understands this technology knows exactly why HTC slapped just 4 ultra-pixels...

Its like this... Take someone with perfect vision and put them in a dark room... Then take someone with sub-par vision and put them in a well lit room... The person with the sub-par vision will see much better than the perfect vision dark room guy...

The mega-pixel simply can't capture the kind of light of an ultra pixel... You dont need to pack as much ultra pixel into a camera because of this... At the end of the day... The shots explain for themselves... Its not even a debate! The M8 Ultra pixel camera simply out does the mega-pixel cameras...

The only downside of the M8 UltraPixel camera being only 4uP is that it can't be used for zooming, because as soon as you zoom you will notice pixlation in the shot, other than that, it is the perfect camera for a smartphone in terms of speed and quality.

Seeing that HTC has already made an M8 version with a 13MP camera based on the lame customers complaints, I truly hope that it will not effect the next HTC franchise, and cause them to drop the UltraPixel tech.

I had the M7 and I thought it took nice pictures (apart from the purple tint at night) but then I got the M8 and I was impressed with the camera quality. My family has iPhone 5S, iPhone 5, and Galaxy S5 and I have compared pictures and I must say that the M8 takes absolutely incredible pictures, especially at night - which, in my opinion, it does better than the other devices mentioned. When I started browsing the M8 forums I noticed many people were complaining about the camera and I never understood why. My best friend recently bought one and traveled to Helsenburg and took some AWESOME pictures where there are rainbows, green areas, sunny sky, etc. and he told me that the M8 takes better pictures than the phones he compared head-to-head with (his friends use iPhone 6 and similar new devices) so I do not understand what the complaints are all about, or whether when someone reads a complaint starts to believe it as well without experimenting much first.

If the camera didn't have the crappy coating that scratches easily, and has to be removed or replaced, I would be satisfied with the performance of the camera. Given the problems that many people have experienced, not to mention the purple haze issue with the M7, I will likely never buy another HTC phone. Too bad, because everything else about the phone seems fine.
