[Mac Procedure]: How to Root the HTC Thunderbolt

Still no luck. I feel like I've tried everything.... I've restarted my phone and computer several times. I have also tried restarting the computer with the phone plugged in. I've toggled USB debugging and Disk Drive several times and I still can't seem to get adb to list my device. I've even tried changing USB cables and switching USB ports.

I want to figure this out, because I went back and found that in other procedures (here and elsewhere) that a percentage of Mac OSx users were having the same issue as you.

So...

  1. Leave the TB plugged into your Mac and the terminal window open.
  2. Reboot Thunderbolt
  3. Does your Mac display a popup that says "New Network Found "?
  4. If it does, click cancel.
  5. Go back to terminal and retry ./adb devices.

Still doesn't work?

  1. Open up System Preferences on your Mac. (applications > system preferences)
  2. Click on Network
  3. Grab a capture of what you see (like mine below) and paste it here.
  4. If there's something there that looks obviously related, try deleting it.

Still doesn't work?

I'm uploading a procedure on how to install the latest SDK. I didn't want to use that in the procedure -- because it adds a layer of complexity -- but if that's what it takes to resolve the rare cases like yours, then so be it.

Please Help Cory,

I'm at the Boot loader on step #2 " The screen will change and Fastboot will be selected. Around 10 seconds later it will then proceed to the next step."

I've been waiting for about 20 mins, and it it doesn't proceed to the next step. Please let me know what should I do. Don't want to disconnect the phone..

Chances are, something went wrong in one of the steps below. If it's still stuck, go ahead and do a battery pull and reboot.
4. Download the following file to your SD card: PG05IMG_downgrade.zip

5. On your SD card rename: PG05IMG_downgrade.zip to PG05IMG.zip

Once you've rebooted, check your SD card and verify the following:

  • Right-click on the zip file and click on get info. Make sure the file size is as follows: 482.2 MB on disk (482,238,083 bytes)
  • Make sure the zip is not in any folders on your SD card. You should have just drag and dropped it to the card.
  • Make sure there aren't 2 extensions like this: PG05IMG.zip.zip. I doubt there will be, because this is a stupid thing that sometimes happens in Windows when people try to rename files. (try writing a procedure for Windows sometime. 30 different variables for every step)

If you come back for more help, it's critical I get a copy of what you've typed into terminal. Select all and paste here into a post. Any screen captures you can provide of files on your SD card are also helpful.

adb does not list device

I left the terminal window open, with the thunderbolt attached to my mac and reset the thunderbolt. I did not get any pop ups. I normally get the error "this disk is not readable by this computer," but I didn't get that error this time either. After the Thunderbolt booted back up I selected Disk Drive on the device. After it loaded to the desktop I typed ./adb devices in terminal and still no luck. I have included a snap-shot of my network window. This doesn't have anything to do with Easy Tether does it? I might try uninstalling Easy Tether on my phone and mac and try again.

Uninstalled Easy Tether from my phone and deleted it from my network connections. I rebooted my machine and phone and tried again. Still no luck.

Download and open Android Terminal Emulator from the market. Type SU and tell me what happens.

Uninstalled Easy Tether from my phone and deleted it from my network connections. I rebooted my machine and phone and tried again. Still no luck.

Do this in a terminal window and try again:

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/EasyTetherUSBEthernet.kext

Download ES File Explorer from the market. Navigate to your SD card and tell me what the name of the file is called.

i used depositfiles to download and megaupload it says its 399mb but when it gets finished downloading its 980.1 mb. what did i do wrong?

You are not supposed to unzip the zip. Just download it [the zip] and move it [the zip] to your SD card. You have unzipped it is the problem.

I think it unzipped itself because I just downloaded it and Thats how it came out. Should I download it to a different location or try to disable ny unzip program because it automatily unzips it??

Use Safari and choose the option to "download linked file as"

Using Safari: click link to open Multiupload page --> right click the direct download button > download linked file as > click No Name in upper left corner (your SD card) > click save

I have run into issues after downloading the second zip to my sd card and beginning to enter into terminal. I come up with:

erik-hughess-macbook:tools erikhughes$ ./adb devices
List of devices attached
HT12GS020649 offline

Can you help me out with this?

Did you do all of this first?

  1. hit the menu capacitive button > settings > applications > development > check USB debugging > then click Ok.
  2. Swype down on notification panel.
  3. You will see "Charge Only: Select to change USB connection type" --> press it.
  4. Select Disk Drive and then click Done.
