Curious about all the folks buying online. Personally, I like to put my grubby hands on a device in the store before I buy it. Is it a case of not living close enough to a providers retail store to make it practical?

Re: Mail Order or In Store Purchase?

Most times it's just about how practical it is to just go online, click a few boxes, enter your info, and voilá! New phone, straight to your front door. Also, online retailers usually have more promotions and offers that bring the retail price down, and if you live in a state that doesn't collect online sales taxes, you save on that as well. Other times, you just can't find the device you want in a store near you (or there's just no store near you at all) and you are forced to get it online if you really want it.

But in my case, even if I order online, I NEED to use the device first. See if it really fits me or if it's just Internet Infatuation. So I'll still try to go to a store, try it out, and then decide where to buy if it turns out to be a device I want to buy.

Re: Mail Order or In Store Purchase?

AFAIK mail order is just faster for new phones. People on XDA are reporting AT&T phones out for delivery as of this morning. I hate having others (ie retail staff) get hands on my phone first (and sometimes carelessly) but it's how I ensure they don't F-up my legacy data plan. I'm only considering waiting for Costco's wireless partner to carry at their booth because their Squaretrade offer has a lower deductible.

Re: Mail Order or In Store Purchase?

I've ordered every one of my devices online. The nearest T-Mobile retailer is 45m away, and in the case of the G3, I'm getting married on the 17th, so getting away from all of the planning and preparation to buy a phone is gonna be damn near impossible. Hopefully the pre-order will put it on my doorstep a couple of days before the 17th :D

Ordered mine online as well. If I don't like it then it will go back within the return policy. Two weeks is long enough to decide whether I want to keep the device or not.

That's a good point. In 'normal' retail stores you can actually go in to try one device, see another one right next to it, and fall in love. You don't get the same from online stores, you just get the pictures and sponsored reviews.

Re: Mail Order or In Store Purchase?

I order EVERYTHING online. Just like you getting excited to see it in store, I get excited to sit home comfortably and unbox that first brown box. It's something me and my Fiance both enjoy, unboxing EVERYTHING. We actually have 4 more packages coming in between now and then. Everything from a printer, vanity, toiletries, paper and even envelopes and stamps! We have issues lol, especially since everything is readily available since we live center city.

Re: Mail Order or In Store Purchase?

I always order via phone. Sales people in store can't do much other than what is listed price wise but the phone sales always give me a great deal. For instance, I just called and the rep sold me a G watch with the G3 for $350 total and I didn't use an upgrade. This is the second time I have done this. All you have to do if you want to do this is be polite and tell the truth; I told the guy I was a phone junkie and he helped me out significantly with this deal. Love AT&T.

Comparing devices in the store was something I hadn't even thought about when posing my question. I remember going to a store with the intention of buying one highly touted phone only to be appalled by the display compared to a device right next to it on the shelf.

I just find it easier to order online. And with two weeks to return it. I have all I need.

I have done both in the past but online is simple and my preferred way for preorders. Plus I just pop my existing SIM into my new device and I am up and running with no chance of my plan getting changed or loosing my unlimited data! Lol!

Plus I like to break the seal on a new device which does not always happen at a store. And the screen protector goes on in the first minute, case after that.

I think if you order in store it ships via UPS and if you do it online it ships via FedEx. I did mine in the store I work at and it's UPS 2 day air. The ones I've seen do it online, it ships FedEx overnight.

Just ordered mine at the store and they won't be shipping it for a week. Total b.s.

What about the restocking fee if you return it? Do you just eat that cost?

Also, is there any way to get out of the total BS $40 upgrade fee?

With the Next program, there is no upgrade fee and it is actually cheaper in the long run.

Re: Mail Order or In Store Purchase?

If it's a pre-order I do it online. Always get the device before they're in the stores. Received the G3 this morning. If the device is already released, I buy it at the store. Basically, which ever way I can get it quicker.
