making a phone into a tablet

I was curious about this seeing broken but otherwise powerful phones on craigslist. I was wondering if I could just get a cheap 7' LCD and digitizer and cobble them together, would the LCD ribbon be compatible? This would be interesting since it seems most lower end tablets are phone pcbs with a big battery attached
