Marshmallow update?

Lollipop 5.0.2 is only about four months old and Lollipop 5.0 itself is only a year. Come on, how often do you really think updates come out?

Lollipop was good enough for you when you bought the tablet. What functionality does Marshmallow bring that you can't actually live without?

It's the lack of security updates that worries me more... They haven't released any in the UK since February....

Also.... Lollipop 5.0.2 (LRX22G) version was released for the first-generation Nexus 7 on December 19, 2014. So say two months after that it would have been available for OEMs

I have a WiFi 8" model and received the update about 2 weeks ago. No issues whatsoever with the download.

Fair enough. I'm for pushing out security updates whenever there are new ones.

But, don't compare a Nexus devices to non-Nexus devices. Nexus devices are udpated by Google directly, not by the OEMs. Nexus devices also are ALWAYS the first to get updated. Usually the update is an early (not-quite beta) version. Nexus devices were originally intended for developers and testers. They then went mainstream as other people who either like to get the newest updates first, or like to fiddle with their devices started demanding them. It was also Googles way of getting around the OEMs and carriers when it came to Android experience. kind of like how Apple works. The Nexus versions OS is pure Android with no OEM skins/apps.

When it comes to security and OS udpates. It's Googles responsibility to provide the OS and any security updates. Google updates the base OS and any security patches, then ships it out to the OEMs. From there the OEMs then update their builds for each model, add any OEM specific skins/apps (in Samung's case TouchWiz) and test them, then send out the OTA. This is generally for WiFI only models. LTE/Cell capable models is slightly different.

In the case of LTE capable models, the cell phone carriers, they test them and if there are any issues, they kick it back and tell the OEMs to fix the issues. Once it passes carrier testing then the carrier sends out the OTA.

I'm on 5.1.1 here in the US. But that doesn't mean you're behind in updates. My Tab S2 is a different model than yours. Mine is the Tab S2 Nook, which has Barnes & Noble's Nook software integrated into the OS. So my OS version would be different than yours. Since I don't have acces to the non-Nook version to verify, I don't exactly know which OS version of Lollipop it has.

If the OS was a pure Samsung inhouse OS, then I would agree that there is a problem. But it's not and Samsung has to make sure it works on ALL of its devices. The last thing Samsung, or any other OEM wants is their devices to cause major problems, both for the users and for network managers.

Country and model please. Is the Nook version or non-Nook version? Hardware wise they are identical, it's the software that is different.

I'm don't own a nexus device since the n4 phone... Have an old oneplus one running all the latest Android security updates, shame a huge company like Samsung arnt as on the ball.. Oh and oneplus one are slow really slow...
So how come people with the same hardware as me in the USA had 5.1 then 5.1.1 now 6.1 with all the security updates? Your argument makes no sense since I don't have a cellular tablet.. Agreed your tab is a different thing....

That's a good question. The Tab S2 Nook and Tab S2 8" are the same hardware wise. It is the software that is different. Like I said, I don't have access to a US Tab S2 8" to compare. I'll have to check out my local Best Buy store to see if there is a difference.

My actual model# is: SM-T710NZKEBNN

The non-Nook is: SM-T710NZWEXAR

Samsung

That is why I think you have a different OS version. What is weird is that some people with the 8" WiFi only version got updated, but others did not.

The only explanation is that Samsung was doing what is called a "soak test" to certain devices. What a soak test does is provides Samsung feedback on any issues with the update process. If it comes back with no, or very little problems, then Samsung pumps out the OTA to everybody. If there were significant problems, the Samsung has to iron them out and try again. That is just speculation though and based on my knowledge of the update process.

The fact that certain models were updated but others not leads me to think that Samsung is having problems getting the OTA out. I don't think it is a lack of support.

It's very strange btw the 8 inch here in the UK has mm just not the 9.7 yet in other regions it seems to be the other way, it's more than strange and Samsung need to get a grip and sort out their update cycles.. They can't be soak testing publicly in various regions, as I'm sure your aware this is all done privately before google signs the release..

The "software update" option on my US wifi-only 9.7" keeps telling me that there was a network or server error. I installed Smart Switch which immediately told me that an update was available, however it would only download 70% of the file and then tell me that there is an error in the downloaded file. Live chat with support refused to believe the error message I was getting, so they convinced me to factory reset my tablet. Other than wiping everything, it didn't do anything.

It sounds like it's corrupted the download to me and if that's the case unless you have root not much you can do... I stand to be corrected I'm no uber expert... (same hardware 3 OS versions and 4 security updates in front of the UK :( )

Google has no say when Samsung updates its devices and soak tests are done publicly. Like I said previously, Google only provides the base OS and any security updates to the OEMs. Each OEM then overlays their GUI and adds any OEM specific stuff (i.e. TouchWiz for Samsung and firmware).

You also have to keep in mind that there are three different models for the WiFi only versions, just for the Tab S2 (9.7", 8", and Nook 8"). Samsung also has other models to support as well.

Tab E (both Nook and non-Nook)
Tab 4 (both Nook and non-Nook)
Tab A (7", 8" and 9.7")
Note 10.1
TabPro S
Galaxy View

Just to name a few. Each and every one of those has to have it's own OS build. Just based on this list (which is not all inclusive), that comes to 13 different OS/firmware builds.

Then add to that the LTE capable models and phones, you're now talking well over two dozen different OS/firmware builds that Samsung has to support and update.

This article is dated June 24, so keep in mind it's not all inclusive.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow update roundup

Any sensible oem updates their top of the line devices first (forgetting their phone market, but even taking that into consideration, S7 and edge then S2) the S2 forget the others until then...
As I said before mine is wifi only so no basebands to worry about...

LOL. Samsung has several "top of the line" devices. The kicker is that according to another article, the UK 8" (i.e. your model) was supposed to be updated back in early May. At least according to GSM Arena.

Which leads me back to my original theory that Samsung is having problems with the update. What sort of problems? That is a good question, which I don't have an answer.

I just thought of this. I'm in the US, true, but I live in Hawaii, which is a state of the US, but not technically part of North America.

I am wondering if that is why I'm not getting the update here. To my knowledge only Continental US (CONUS) devices are getting the update.

Another thought is that you live on an island, and I live on an island; neither one of us is getting updated...coincidence? lol...

Here is a list of the most current builds for the WiFi 8".

YouFirmware - Samsung SM-T710 (Wi-Fi)

Here is the 9.7"

An Error Has Occurred!

Yeah I looked at their firmware wage before I even posted here the other day..
If you look at both models and see which regions have anything past 5.0.2 it makes even less sense...
I think the tablet is going back today, even though it's not so old they can't keep on top of security updates let alone any other update, this makes me uncomfortable as I planned to keep it a couple of years.....

I stopped by Best Buy this afternoon. Both the 8 and 9.7 models were on 5.0.2. They had an update pending, but it wasn't Marshmallow. It looked like 5.1.1. It seems that the Marshmallow update hasn't reached Hawaii yet.

My wifi only Tab S2 9.7 64Gb downloaded the Marshmallow update while I was sleeping. Not sure I want to install. I installed on my Note 4 3 days ago. Not sure I'm so happy with it. And I love my Tab S2 the way it is on Lollipop. Waiting for more specific reports on Tab S2 results.

It's fine on my phone but that's very vanilla....
