Mediaserver battery drain

Hi, my galaxy s4 uses a huge amount of battery on mediaserver. I don't know what it does, and i can't figure it out. I tries to disable push notifications a couple of weeks ago, but that only helped for a couple of days. When i use it very easy, like listening to music or an already downloades podcast, it can use up to 30 percent in one hour. Before the mediaserver battery drain started i could almost go the whole day with about the same loss in battery.

Welcome to the forums. If you have an SD card in the device, try turning your phone off, pulling the SD card out and rebooting it.

I installed Mediaserver a couple of weeks ago, because I needed something like that. I noticed the same thing - very high battery consumption - so I uninstalled it. There are other apps. (I ended up with a Chromecast and the Chromecast app. The S4 is a supported device, so you can mirror the phone to the TV and run any app you like to the TV screen. [To save you searching, pull the menu - 3 bars at the top left - and Cast Screen, then press the Cast Screen button that comes up.])

Okay, so i tried to oull out my sd card and reboot the phone. It lowered the battery usage from the mediaserver with a couple percent, but it is still pretty bad.

Do you have a lot of photo, video, or music files in Internal Storage? If one of those files is corrupt, it might cause the system's Media Scanner to get hung up on that file, which increases CPU usage and drains battery. I'm not sure if Media Scanner is part of Mediaserver, but if you do have a number of media files on Internal Storage, you might want to try moving them off the phone, perhaps by connecting the phone to your computer via USB and copying the files over to the hard drive. Then delete the files on the phone.

Removing the SDcard was NOT the fix.
Neither was deleting the thumbnails.
Disabling Media Server has given the tablet new life!

I was wondering exactly the same issue even very similar pictures like you have posted here. However, I found, that if you look at battery usage graph and click it you see this place where you see that carrier is on, wifi is on, how many time is awakens and so on. Because i knew that my wifi CANT be on, I was very confused and start looking how the h.. it showes that my wifi is ALWAYS on, when it is "actually" off. And I found this article, that solved my same problem you described and mediaserver process got lost too from the very top, so it seems that this so called "meiaserver" drain is actually your WIFI is hiddnely always on:

I had the issue today, among a few other issues. Everything on my phone has been great and I have changed nothing until last night.

I installed a small game last night. Today my phone was hot, battery draining, media server way up and icons for apps had the wrong icon, displaying the icon of another app and icons were invisible.

Due the the high media server, I took my card out, cleared cache, rebooted phone without card.

All the above problems were still there.

I uninstalled that game, everything went back to normal.

Often your Media scanner can misbehave and eat lot of CPU, Battery un-wantedly.

I had been digging out how to fix it, and here are my solutions. Perhaps try al of them, it would definitely relieve your cpu and battery usage by large. Solution works on any Android version:

Solution 1. Clear media storage data
Settings > applications > Media Storage > clear data, force stop and reboot.

Solution 2. Remove unwanted media files
Navigate to /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails and delete all files. Repeat for external sd card.
On AOSP roms, Android gallery creates too many of thumbnails that later becomes problematic for media scanner.

Solution 3. Analyze and delete excessive media files
Find out what files are causing media scanner to go mad.
Use any sdcard analyst (I use ES file manager > menu > Sd card analyst) to determine which directory has lots of files/subdirectories inside it. Any directory having >1000 files/folders is an alarmingly high number. Get rid of them (if you can).

step 3 is the easy way to solve it any noobers can do this.

Are you using a Live wallpaper app? if so, remove it.

1- Plz delete unsupported gallery files on phone memory and sd card memory.
Example : .mkv .flv .

2- Uninstall sony tv application or cast creen or meera cast like that.

Goto play store , search word with "sony ", if any sony apps installed in your phone, uninstall that app .

Reboot phone now check........it.

I've had this today on my S7 edge.
I found out that I had a new game to wich I refused storage access. After granting it access to my storage, the problem dissappeared instantly.

Seems it kept trying to access my storage, wich it couldn't.

Since last upgrade, my S7 is draining batery like hell!! How did you figure out which app had a storage access problem?

Welcome to Android Central! It might also be a problem with an update of the Oculus app, which was well-documented. Another update was supposed to fix the problem, but try disabling or uninstalling Oculus to see if that helps.

I have this issue on my Note Pro. It seem to go away after I restarted the tablet but then it would just comeback. I reset it to factory and it seemed resolved... until I opened Chrome. All of the sudden the media server issue returns. Switch to Firefox... same thing. Tried the default browser... no more media server issue and battery life is back to normal. I don't seem to have this issue on my Note 4 however so I'm not sure if it's an OS issue as my Note 4 is running a much more current version of andriod vs the Note Pro. I think I'm going to give the Pixel a serious look so I can get updates as Google releases them instead being left behind with old software.
