Android Central Question

I'm getting a "File System Limit" message on my phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

I've only had my phone for about 3 months and I get this message that will not go away. I took it to an AT&T store and even they haven't seen it before. I have 32G of storage remaining. The message also reads "Too many files have been created on your phone. Apps may stop working correctly and your phone may no longer start up. Back up any important data and factory reset your phone."

Re: I'm getting a "File System Limit" message on my phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

Hi gamermaniac55
The root cause of the error (at least on my samsung s7) is an app generating lots of files..they can be small files but if there are too many then youll see the message :Too many files have been created on your phone.
Check under settings - apps - all apps - sort by size
Note it can take a minute before the sizes are calculated for all apps.
Any app with more than 500 MB ..or apps where storage is growing daily could be causing the issue.
I can confirm since doing clear data under storage for the biggest size apps has SOLVED this issue now for good. Good luck

I clear the cache and data of my apps on the daily and it still gets it after about a week :/ i even tried installing the clean master app and using it twice a day and nothing. I'll give it another go and update you guys with what happens

Re: I'm getting a "File System Limit" message on my phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

Well I've got news for you regarding clean master for all those with Samsung galaxy

I think they got rid of that on newer phones. But then they went to 360 Security, which is hardly any better.:-\

Re: I'm getting a "File System Limit" message on my phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

it lasted a couple more days longer than usual before happening again but it happened despite clearing caches of all my apps a few times a day
i think i'm just gonna have to deal with it at this point :/

Try Data Size Explorer from the playstore when you get the message. You will see all the files.

File system limit -

Dedtal massage " Too many files have been created on your phone. Apps may stop working correctly and your phone may be no longer start up. Back up any important data and factory reset your phone."

Re: File system limit -

Just did this with my wife"s iPhone. Freed up about 2gigs of space. She was getting similar system messages.

Re: I'm getting a "File System Limit" message on my phone. Anyone else experiencing this?

I sorted my apps by size.
My big one was 3gb in n Google Play Services.
I cleared data in the app. Now its 233mb & the too many files notification is gone.
Phone (S7) is working much faster again.
I'll have to wait & see how long it lasts.

Thanks for all the hints.

Re: File system limit warning

I sorted my apps in order of size (settings/apps) you might need to 'show system apps' in the 3 dots menu (top right)
(I takes a while to list in size order - especially if your phone is running slow)
Google play services was registering 3gb of data, so I cleared data/cache and rebooted.
Phone works much better now and File system limit notification has gone.
I also deleted alot of old apps I don't use and moved as much data/photos etc over to the sd card.
Fingers crossed it lasts!

hello,
Same problem with my galaxy S6. Starting september 2018, every mounth I must do a reinitialisazion, even I limited the number a apps intalled. Neither solutions proposed in this thread solve this problem :(

Jim Agnew:
THANK YOU. PingTools was >1GB on my Galaxy Tab A, wifi wouldn't start. Surprised this problem report and resolution is so hard to find. Maybe newer versions increased inode limit or something. My S9 runs pingtools fine. But i will consider using an alternative tool there as well.

Hi Everyone,

I have a Samsung J5 and every month I get an error:

"File System Limit: too many files have been created on yiur phone. Apps may stop working correctly and your phone may no longer start up. Back up any important data and reset your phone".

Since around 2017 I have reset this phone about 50 times (no joke)

Phone info:
Samsung J5
Bought in Dubai (dual sim - I live in Ireland)
Using 11.5gb of 16gb
SW is up to date
Havd removed all usued apps, files etc - evrrything I can is stored on SD

Any ideas?

Mario

Welcome to Android Central! Have you ever used a file manager app to browse through the user-accessible directories, to see if there are any folders that have a whole ton of files?

Thanks for the welcome and reply!!

So I used androids interal 'my files' app and I also downloaded a file manager. Once I removed the SD card I have 0 songs, media, 10 apps. I found some empty directories and deleted them too.

There is nothing else that I can find that I can delete off this phone unless I remove all the apps too but then whats the point in the phone?

Seems to be something inherintly wrong with this harware or software. I have a Samsung A5 for work which holds hundreds of photos with no SD card and no problem.

Im honestly not sure what else I can do besides smashing the phone!!

How many apps do you have on the phone?

Hey.. so as above I have 10*

I have * as the system is only counting apps I have downloaded, Twitter for example and its not counting the Samsung browser for example.
